My 12V battery died, and after I jump started my 04' Prius the car started right up, however the hazard and check engine light are now on. Also, there is a symbol on the display screen that looks like a car with an exclamation point through it. When I consulted the owner's manual, the course of action would be to immedietly take my prius to the toyota dealer. Has anyone ever experienced this after jump starting their prius? I have a feeling that something needs to be reset after being jump started...if anyone has any expertise on this subject please help!!:(

I think it re-sets after you re-start the car 3 times once problem is rectified.

    Whew!

This seems like a good time to remind readers that jumping a Prius (or any recent car for that matter) backwards (that is, with reversed polarity) can cause hundreds or even thousands of dollars of damage to the wiring and electronics, and it will not be covered by a warranty. When in doubt, call a dealer. Don't guess, and don't let a random tow truck driver, road club person or good Samaritan guess either.

Agree. Just to make sure we are all in the same page. (+) is RED and (-) is BLACK on the battery terminal. :D

On jumping from other vehicles, do not immediately trust the color-coding of the battery terminal wires. I have seen aftermarket cables of various colors. The safest thing is to trace one of the cables to a chassis ground point; then it's the negative.

Almost for sure. A very few older vehicles have positive gound systems, and that could ruin your day. So be very careful with Prius jumping everybody.

    Ohhhhh...... how true!

I once was asked if I could give a friend a jump. His battery had two black cables and the battery posts were not marked. I studied under his hood for awhile and still couldn't make a determination for sure. So, I decided to take a risk and hooked 3 of the four cables. I brifly touched the 4th cable to the terminal and expected arc-welding type sparks. Got very small sparks so I figure this was a good sign. Turned out he had a negative ground system after all. By the way, this was a few years back and I was not jumping from a Prius. As a matter of fact, if anyone asked me if I could give them a jump from my Prius, I will respectfully decline. Not worth taking any risks with my car.
