    All,

I stopped at an AT&T Wireless store today, they let me take a new Nokia 6820 to our Prius to see if it works with the integrated Bluetooth system. We were able to successfully pair the devices and make a call. We couldn't judge call quality, as we seemed to be in a marginal area, as was the person we called. It didn't appear that the signal strength appears on the display as it does with the Sony phones, but I didn't play with it long enough to confirm that.

If anyone else has more experience with this phone in the Prius please post your observations here.

OK, I've gone ahead and bought the 6820. It's a very nice phone, compact yet solid, lots of features. The Bluetooth integration with the Prius works well. When I enter the car the phone and the Prius quickly discover each other and calls get seamlessly routed. The signal strength meter is not active, but it does display if the phone is not receiving any signal. The only problem I've had is there doesn't seem to be a way to transfer the whole phone directory, you have to do it one-by-one, which is fairly tedious. Nonetheless, that's likely to be a one-time-only effort.

The 6820 does indeed work very well with the prius given some limitations.

But my 6820 has weird stuff happen to it with the SIM card. In fact, I've had to replace it.

Now, I wasn't able to figure out how to transfer to the directory. Is this yet another screwy thing wrong with my phone. (I normally don't get the first batch of technology stuff because of things like this.) Personally, I think I have a monday morning lemon phone and will probably replace it with another once they start getting more in the stores.

The only way I've found to transfer entries is one at a time (from memory, might not be exact):
    • Go to the Prius telephone settings screen
      Choose Transfer Phonebook
Find the desired contact in your 6820
      Press Details
      Press Options
      Choose "Send Bus. Card"
      Choose "Via Bluetooth"
The phone will look for devices (you can press "Stop" as soon as your Prius shows up). Choose the correct device, the contact will get transferred.
      • It's a lot of keypresses, but with practice you can get it down to twenty seconds or so each.

To make things easier I copied the internal phone book to the SIM card, then used Nokia PC Suite to change the names on the SIM card from "First Last 1" to "First Last:C" (or whatever). Then when I'm transferring the names I have only SIM card address book active so I don't have to wade through all the internal names. I think it would also be possible to take your SIM and put it in a 616 (perhaps your friendly cellular store would let you borrow one long enough to do this) and transfer the whole directory at once.
