I'm just wondering if anyone here programs EPROM's? I'm needing some guidance with EPROM's.

Here is what I'm trying to do just for some background information.

I have a Daytona USA Twin arcade machine and I wanted to upgrade it to Daytona GTX 2004. This requires replacing two EPROM chips and installing a security board. I have had this kit for over a month now and I cant get it to work at all. I turn on the machine and I can get it into the service menus but it will not go into attract mode. The machine will boot but will lock up before it gets into attract mode. I have talked with the company I bought it off of and they have no clue on what the issue is and has given me a refund but they said I could keep the chips. Why they said that I don't know.

Anyway I was thinking today and looking at the MAME roms of the game and seen that the version I have ( the one with Saturn ads ) uses two different versions of the EPROM chips than the standard version of the game. I'm thinking the GTX version uses the original version of the game since I cant enable the Saturn ads in the service menu. If this is correct I'm wondering if the GTX verion of the game is not compatible with the two EPROM versions I have?

Well the only way to test that theory is to reprogram the chips or find replacements and here is where I need your help. I want to buy a programmer that will program AM27C1024-70DC and AM27C400-120DC EPROM chips. I don't know what I need to search for because I don't know what search terms I need to use to find the right programmer.

What I need to know is what programmer to buy that's cheap and will program these chips. I think I have found a UV eraser for less than $50. I also would like to know if there is any place to buy these EPROM chips so I have some spares to play with? The only place I found to buy the EPROM chips directly was ebay but I don't want to go that route. I cant find a site that sells the chips directly. Any help with that would be appreciated.

Once I get a programmer I will use the MAME rom files to program the chips. Hopefully I can get this upgrade kit working as I really want to see how well this upgrade affects game play.

There is a cheap "home made" programmer made by a dutch guy called Willem

You can buy as a kit or ready made and it is by far the cheapest you will find.

    Willem Eprom Programmer

Can be a bit fiddly but I use one sometimes. Mostly for eproms I use a Dataman. You can find them on eBay sometimes, you may also find the Willem programmer on eBay.

I have a commercial device programmer made by Needham's Electronics. It works very well, but is probably too expensive for a hobby project.

Looks like I will go with that Willem programmer. I sent an email to the guy asking which programmer I should get for the chips I need to program.

Digi-Key looks like it has the 27c1024 chips in the one time program package which is fine with me for what I need but they don't have the 27c400 or at least not available on the site. I may have to call to see if they can get those. They only other places that might have the chips I need require me to call for stock and price. I hate those sites because I just want to buy it and not go through the hassle of calling and getting stuck with someone that I cant understand.

    Good choice :)

Before you buy any chips join the forum on Willem's site and ask. you will probably find someone who has the chips you need lying around.

Be prepared for some frustration initially with the Willem as it is very prone to problems with different parallel ports but Willem and the forum will solve them for you.

It's been a few years since I used it so maybe things have changed.

    Just an update.

I got the programmer and some replacement chips. I was able to reprogram the chips I needed and my GTX upgrade kit works great.

The one thing I'm looking for now is the Daytona USA "To The MAXX" upgrade kit. Apparently it needs a security board to function. If anyone knows anyone that has this upgrade kit please let me know. I would like to buy it or try to copy the security board.
