smart key issues

If it's under 36K mile I think it's still under warranty, you can at least bring it to the dealer for help.

 

Have you checked the SKS switch under the steering wheel? It is not uncommon for it to be accidentally pushed, which disables the SKS.

If you bought your car from a dealer, perhaps you can go back & complain. If you bought from a private party, perhaps the prior owner had lost the two original fobs, then bought an eBay used fob, only to find that the car could not be programmed to accept it.

If you want the Smart functions to work you'll probably have to visit your local Toyota dealer and pay ~$300 for each new fob and the associated vehicle programming required.

 

Make sure you do not leave anything plugged into the center console power outlet, like a cell phone charger. The I-GO brand gave me Smartkey problems. The OEM one for my phone works fine.

 

Just to let you know, a factory fresh new key cost me $193.15 at the Toyota dealer in Burlington, VT plus $37.50 to program the new key. A previously used SKS fob can only be programed to work when inserted in the slot. None of it's push button or wireless features can be made to work. I have been there and tried that.

 

i paid $180 for new Key and $90 programming in Calif a year ago.

however, regarding your problem...sound to me like it's an Ebay (or used) Smart key that you have as it'll only work when inserted to start vehicle.
so, if you want the SKS benefits, you'll need to pony-up abt $300 at the dealer.

What color is your key fob? You may have been sold a normal key fob, not a smart key. The normal key will start the car, but not do any of the smart functions.

On the fob, is the Toyota emblem black or silver?

 

Sounds like you have the correct fob type. You'll have to rely upon your Toyota dealer if you want to enable Smart functionality.

It's possible that the car might be programmed to recognize the existing fob; more likely you'll need to purchase a new fob. You may want to consider doing whatever is required so that you end up with two working Smart fobs. In the event that one is lost it will be easier to obtain a replacement if you already have a functioning Smart fob. Good luck.

 

I believe the car can be programmed only to recognize a *new* smart key. This is done for security.
