Hey, this is my first time buying a car so I wasn't sure what I was doing, but I work with salesmen all day so I tried to use what I learned.

I bought a 2009 Package #5. The MSRP was set at $26,600 (or something near that). I talked him down $1700 and there's a $2000 rebate since it's the week of President's Day. Also, since I just graduated college I get an additional $400 off and I also got him to sell me accessories at cost (even though I didn't get any), so after taxes I ended up paying $24,300 (or somewhere in there).

They kept saying what a good deal I was getting but really, they're salesmen, that's the kind of crap they're supposed to say whether it's true or not. So I turn to you. Did I get a good deal or is this pretty standard?

You got a great deal in my opinion.
I paid more than that for my option 2.
But I bought it when the cars were scarce.................

Not bad. Next time you can save some bother and perhaps get a better deal by shopping by phone, email and fax. Have every dealer you're willing to consider send you in writing their out-the-door price for the car you want. If you like one dealer more than another ask them to meet the best price.

Yes, you got a great deal. I paid $24,860 for my 2008/pkg 2 back in September 2007, including California tax and license. I bought the car through a Costco referred dealer too, and got the last of the tax credits for the Prius ($787.50) at the time.
Sounds like a great time to be in the market for a new car! Did you finance it or pay cash?

Actually, that's exactly what I did.

Edit: Well, that's sorta what I did. I also told other dealerships that I'm considering buying at X, but if they'll cut me a deal I have no problem driving. Then when they got me the deal I'd call the other five or six dealerships I was talking to and say that I was offered $500, would they go to $1000 and so forth. Did this about six times until I got to $1700 off. At that point only one dealership was willing to do that, so that's the one I picked. I never left my chair for the entire ordeal.

I financed it out to 72 months or something like that. My payments are around 363/month, but I'll probably be paying double that just to get it out of the way faster.

Somebody told me that during this time of the year, car lots have to pay some kind of tax for each car on their lot, so they're a lot more willing to cut deals right now because they want as many cars gone as they can get. Don't know if that's true.

You paid $6k less out the door than many paid for their pack #5 last Summer after waiting 3 months to get the car.

    You did good.

Yes, that is true. It's called the inventory tax, levied on all CA businesses. When I worked for Douglas Aircraft years ago, we regularly flew DC-8s, DC-9s And DC-10s out-of-state prior to April 15, simply to reduce our CA inventory and the associated tax. Those aircraft were expensive, so the tax saving was significant.

With the new taxes to be levied as part of the latest CA budget, look for a big push from car stealerships to induce customers to avoid the new taxes by buying NOW, before the taxes are implemented.

You did WELL, that's a decent price

Just to point out however, what I quoted was a fairly worthless bit of information
