Thanks to you all for all the input. The car came back from the dealer today. They did replace the water pump assy
part # 1 16100-29156-83 and they cleaned the throttle body at no charge to me. Sure enough, they obviously were correct. Noise and roughness completely gone and smooth running now. Let's see how it affects my gas mileage if any.

Thanks for the update, the replaced part is the mechanical coolant pump that is powered via the serpentine drive belt.

Checked mine this morning. The car has 8k on it and it has a little at the bottom. TB and area along with that temp bulb is clean. I places a thin dowel rod down there and I would say it is about 1/16" barely shows on the rod tip.

If Toyota has in their instructions that you can fill to the top dot, then the oil should not be the issue. And, it doesn't seem to hurt anything, so far. I will keep an eye on it. I will do my own oil change and see what happens.:D

I wonder if anyone asked Toyota about that fluid at the bottom of the chamber?

Is that the PCV input to the TB I see just below the plate at 12 o'clock? That is clean, no sign of oil residue.

The two smaller hoses that are at the front/bottom of the TB, are the coolant hoses. The Prius has a heated TB

Looked again, the one I posted about is above the Throttle Valve and the tube protrudes slightly into the TB, maybe a 1/16". Without actually taking things apart for no reason, it looked like that hole may be the one from the PCV line.
Then I opened the throttle valve and see another hole at 12 o'clock, below it and smaller; then straining my head;) I see another small one at 6 o'clock. Those must be the heater?
Isn't there a line from the fuel vapor system into the intake someplace also?

i have never seen a dry tb,every prius i happened to loodown in yhe intake had a small amount of oil/gas on the bottom of tb.also sometimes when the oil is changed and they check the air filter debris can fall down on the mass air flow meter and cause it to act weird or not start at all.

    Hi Charles,

Please look at the rubber hoses that attach to the throttle body. Two of them route engine coolant around the throttle body and the purpose of that is to prevent icing, so that the throttle plate will not stick open. You won't be able to see those connections when you look within the throttle body interior. The coolant flows within the walls of the throttle body.

Then note the large rubber hoses that attach to the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions. Those hoses run up between the engine and the inverter and terminate at the valve cover, although this is hard to see since the engine wire harness covers up the hoses where they connect to the valve cover.

The hose at 12 o'clock which terminates in an opening above the throttle plate provides fresh air into the crankcase. It would be highly unusual to see any oil stains or other staining at that opening since air is supposed to enter, not exit that opening.

The hose at 6 o'clock terminates in an opening below the throttle plate. When the throttle plate is closed or near-closed, engine vacuum will suck crankcase fumes through the PCV valve into the engine intake. You might see some staining around that opening. If you should happen to see lots of oil coming out of that opening, this is very bad.

The hole below the throttle plate at 12 o'clock is probably for the fuel vapor system; I haven't bothered to study that but I believe you can find a decal under the hood that shows the various vacuum hoses.

I've owned both a 2001 and 2004, and in both cases the bottom of the intake manifold had a very light coating of oil (or condensed gasoline, who knows for sure.) This was by no means a "puddle".

Thanks, Patrick. Since one of the openings comes from the crankcase PCV, those fumes would contain or could contain oil particulates and other blowback gases. The lighter gases would be ingested and reburned in the cylinder and some of the heavy droplets perhaps collect at the bottom over time?

    Hi Charles,

    Yes, this is probably correct.

Patrick, thanks for the much clearer explanation. I was a bit rushed and that was poorly worded on my part

I am thinking of sucking that small puddle out somehow and see if it comes back and how fast although after 9k it is not much down there. Maybe it lubricates something mysterious down there;):D
