    Hi all.

I have had my Prius for a week and I am a very happy camper. Only one problem so far: I find it distracting and hard to drive while the Radio/CD is on and simultaneously I recieve voiceover instructions from the NAV system. Is there any setting that will mute the music for the few moments it takes to receive the NAV instructions? I love the NAV and the audio but not both at the same time!

    thanks

no, there's no way to do that automatically.

There are some settings that allow the NAV lady to speak louder depending upon your speed...can't remember exactly where they're buried, but you should be able to figure it out if you play around with the controls a bit.

Evan's right, but if you push the Map button again (either one), you will get to hear the voice instruction repeated to you.

If you use the voice command "Louder," the Nav lady will speak at a more audible level. (I'm afraid to use the command "softer.")

I would assume, if you wanted to completely mute out the audio system, one could hit the power button when you hear the 'ding' knowing she's about to talk. Though, since I haven't tried it myself, I can't confirm if this would mute the NAV lady as well - but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't, if it's engineered correctly. Power on and off makes for a great mute button at least in regards to drive thru's and the like.

It would take surgery, but you could get access to the coil of the relay that intercepts the driver door speaker, then you could send that to the mute line.

Interesting enough, the NAV does have this output for the bluetooth, and could have had an option to use it for NAV as well.

You can shut radio off and Thelma will still be heard. I have done this.

Dan, would I do this "surgery" by myself? or could a dealer/auto electrician do it?

Depends on the experience of you or the auto audio technician with electronics. If they can fix radios, they probably could do it. Would void the warranty on the NAV though.

I was thinking though, if it could be made to detect a DC continuity between the speaker input to output, one could feed the mute line if that connection is broken. Then there's no invasion into the NAV ECU.
