100 mph!

    My husband got stopped in a parking lot last night to answer a few questions about the Prius. One of the concerns was that it wouldn't be able to keep up with highway speeds. My hubby told them that he had no trouble doing 85 when necessary. That impressed them pretty well. But on the way home he saw a stretch of open freeway and decided to punch it. I looked over just as he hit 101mph and then backed off. I said, "You just had to see if it could do it, didn't you?"
    He seemed pretty happy about it and I'm sure that tale will be included next time someone is sceptical about the speeds the Prius is capable of. (bad grammar, I know!) So much for that commercial stating that hybrids can be passed by a moped. Yeah, right! When it's parked! :guns:

    If I remember correctly I read somewhere that the Prius is governed to a top speed of 104 mph.

    I have hit the 104 mark on two separate occasions. I try to go faster but I'm usually out of open road by the time I hit that speed and the Prius doesn't chicane so well at that speed, even with VSC.

    I used a down hill on ramp to the 10 west in Santa Monica both times, each time with a different passenger. the biggest comment was "when did it shift?" It really is cool, the feeling of constant acceleration.

    The specification at UK site says the max speed is 170km/h (105.57MPH).

    Are you guys CRAZY?????

    My pre-prius car was a 1997 Trans-Am and I wouldn't drive THAT car over 90. I guess I just chicken out, but my brain starts thinking things like "What if you hit a pot-hole at this speed".

    I've had ZERO complaints about the power or speed capability of my Prius, but I can assure you that MY Prius will never see 100mph.

    You guys are nuts!!!!!

    I wasn't looking at that. Too busy praying! However, we had just filled up (at 2.65!!) and when we got home 38 miles later our average was 48. He felt pretty good about that number but I couldn't help but wonder what it would have been if he had stayed at or near the legal limit.

    He also drives a Corvette and just had to do it once. I only know of one time he did that with the 'vette on a new freeway near Reno a few years ago. I believe he got to 110 or more but he won't admit it. Hope my insurance agent isn't reading this!

    MPG at 104 MPH between 11 and 13while accelerating, it actually improves after the car stops accelerating at around 104!

    I'll have to try a top speed run when mine comes soon. :D

    Fastest I've done in a car is 235kmh in my old Legend coupe, and 120mph in a 1973 450SL. :oops: Never pushed the Lexus past 210kmh, but it was rock solid at that speed.

    On the Dutch yahoo board one of the members posted about a trip to (I believe it was) Munchen in Germany. On the way there he did 150 km/h and on the return voyage he did 170 km/h (on the speedo). And not just a few miles... :)

    Average consumption was 7,4 litres per 100 km, not bad! :)

    Used to drive my '96 Civic HX cvt @ 120mph on some straight stretches of the road. Kept bouncing off the speed limiter. Some SUVs couldn't keep up, heheh. :p

    I think the Prius is limited at 100mph. Darn!

    hi!

    i have hit the 180kmph (112mph) mark twice :) on the flat, open road here in Poland.
    my current consumption was 8 l/100km (29mpg) and of course after few seconds my battery went to 2 pink bars and average mileage dropped from 48mpg to 44mpg (because only 50km average "lifetime" on the display). i was driving with my wife and two children. I think it is an absolute maximum velocity for the Prius.

    most tires are only rated to 99mph, after that there is no guarantee they won't melt on ya. keep that in mind.
    my prius doesn't get driven over 80mph.

    Of course then your mileage recovers as you get off the accelerator and coast to a stop over the next (maybe) 30 minutes.

    Unless you have to turn. Not a concern on I-80 through Bonneville, east of Wendover.

    That is why the Space Shuttle flies backwards while in orbit. That big butt can act as a shield for the crew compartment if hit by space junk. :bootyshake:

    But even that is no guarantee if they were to hit a larger chunk.

    Hyperspace Dan they are not "in" our universe. I thought everone knew that.

    Did I not imply impulse drive, which is sublight?

    I'll have to read the tech manual, but I don't think the disappeared from the universe, but were able to eliminate mass.

    Interesting how the highly modified BONNEVILLE Prius maxxed out at 130mph. Only 25 mph faster then stock, with being lowered 5 inches, taller gearing, tires, more horsepower(?), lighter, etc.. Yes I know this is a big percentage, but it is a small percentage compared to other "modified" cars and at a relatively low initial speed. Look at how fast "tuner" imports are going in the quarter mile (i.e. 200 mph).

    This tells me the HP increase was minimal and the aerodynamic improvement was minimal (aero improvement was maxxed out from a very good starting point, confirmed by the stock low Cd)
