To ensure you make a good backup disc, try the following task too.

    1. Disconnect all the wire connectors from the navigation unit (under driver seat) for at least 30 sec. There are 3 connectors. (While car powered off).
    2. Reconnect all wire connectors back to the navigation unit. (after 30 sec)
    3. Power on your car.
    4. Navigation unit will start to load the firmware.
    5. If the screen do not have any error message, you successfully duplicate your NAV disc.

I tried doing this with my new 8.1 disk and have three coasters so far. The original disc layer break is at something like 2005730, but this appears to be non-standard in that it's not a multiple of 16, so the burn of the ISO forces it to the next multiple, 2005744. Perhaps the firmware checks for this non-standard artifact and fails to accept discs that do not conform?

Yeah, doesn't work for me either. Tried backing up like others have done, but my 2006 doesn't like the back ups. The v8.1 disc that I bought works perfectly.

I have had success making backups of the NAV DVD. I'm currently running a backup in my Prius.

I would like to offer to make backups for people but I don't know the legalities of offering such a service even if done for free when you provide the original disc.

If anyone is interested I can try to make a backup for you if you send me your original DVD plus a DVD+R DL in a DVD case to protect it during shipping. I'll ship everything back once I finish the burn. The only thing I ask would be that you pay the shipping and insurance. USPS priority 2 day is usually fast and cheap.

If Danny or the mods feel this offer might violate the law or get PriusChat.com in trouble feel free to remove my offer.

TheForce: Please explain how you did it, what software programs you used, what type of burner used and type of discs used first. Any special settings used? Thanks in advance.

I have a Pioneer 112D DVD burner. I use Verbatim DVD+R DL media. I use Nero to burn the image. As long as the booktype of the DVD+R DL is set to DVD-ROM when burning the Prius should read the disc just fine. My DVD burner automatically sets the booktype of DVD+R DL to DVD-ROM. If yours does not you have to change it in your burning software. Also your burner would have to support changing the booktype.

How is the 8.1 version? I'm going on a long roadtrip this summer and want to upgrade from 7.1. My dealer (Canada) says the Canadian supply has no ETA right now. Any other Canucks that have 8.1 or know where to get it?

So if you open your copy with imgburn (or dvddecrypter), what does the layer break information say? Maybe that's a red herring and it really just depends on the media (I used two different Memorex DVD+R DL types).

I don't know what the layer break was. I don't think I will have time to check any time soon. Sorry.

I'm still stuck on the original disk that was in my vehicle when I bought it in Jul of '06. So I'm guessing that I have 5.1 I think. I haven't found the need for more POIs or missing streets, but what other benefits would I have besides the "I Agree" disappearing?

I tried the same method I used with 7.1 on the 8.1 disc, but I haven't been able to get it to work either. I wonder if they've introduced copy protection on the 8.1 disc.

Yes, they must have done something different. I have 5 coasters so far. I guess it makes me feel a little better that you, alanh, used the same method, but were unable to backup v8.1.

I'm attempting the process using Nero and the DVD drive built into my Dell computer. I can't find booktype anywhere in the Nero UI for making a DVD copy. using the nero info tool, I can't find any reference to booktype either. Can you provide any hints as to where the option might be found?

I've been able to burn and verify a copy but it doesn't work (TDK+rDL media).

I think its under the Recorder/Disc Info. If its not there your burner does not support it or it may automatically set it on its own. Since you made a copy and it did not work I would say your burner does not support it.

Well I got my hands on a copy of 8.1 and tried to load it in my car. I get the "check DVD" error message. I then tried to load my back up copy of 6.1 which was working fine before but I get the same error. The only thing that works for me now is my original 5.1 DVD. :( On the plus side the "I Agree" screen is no longer there. There must be something in the new firmware that checks for an original disc because everything is the same as my 6.1 copy that was working fine before the 8.1 update.

    Hi TheForce,

I made the same mistake as you, so now my drive will definitely not read hybrid discs.
I was reading that the 8.1 disc updated not only the firmware of the NAV, but also the firmware of the DVD drive itself. So even if you pulled the fuse and reloaded the 5.1 NAV firmware off an old disc, the DVD drive's firmware has been permanently upgraded.

    :(

I'm just wondering if it is copy protection what kind of protection is it and can it be removed or changed?

In the past, I have had consistently poor results with Memorex DVDR's (+ and -). They have too high reflectivity, and are not playable on any of my DVD Players, Blu Ray, or even HD DVD players. Sometimes they work on my computers. I do not use them any more, even though they always seem to be on sale.

Verbatims are consistently good, in my experience. They work where others have failed. The only problem is, the dual layers cannot be read by some players (older players, for the most part).

Your idea about where the layer break enters in is a good possibility.

How big is the file? For DVDR's, single layer playability is much more consistent than dual-layer. If all the information fits on one single-layer disc, use the single layer. I have had consistently good experiences with verbatim, then Maxell, Fuji, and Sony.

If you must use Dual layer, I recommend ONLY verbatim dual-layers. In my experience, they are consistently good. Never had a coaster yet. Also, keep the burning speed at the lowest setting to insure a nice burn. Sometimes coasters are the result of simply trying to burn at high speeds where errors are more likely.

Using Nero software: should set by default to DVD ROM booktype, in my experience. Use copy DVD; don't get into subdividing VOB files, etc. ANY change to the structure of a disc can make it unplayable.

copy protection: a good sign that it is NOT present is that you can copy the data onto your hard drive, and\or burn it to disc. If this were a matter of copyguarding, Nero would inform you of it's presence.

There are additional, legal software packages available that will allow you to get past typical copyguards.

Of course, I cannot condone copying proprietary information, and do not know what laws apply to this software. It makes sense that keeping a proprietary disc in a hot car will eventually takes it's toll on the disc, so I think that the capability to copy this software needs to be allowed. After all, the only people who need it are people who bought the car and had, at one time or another, the disc. I mean, who else out there is just begging for a bootleg copy of a DVD based navigation system??? Anyone???

Disclaimer: I am speaking in terms of general DVD burning. My final thought is, do not copy anything if it is against the law.

    Good luck!

I do not own a Prius yet, but a few folks at work do. I will check with them and see if either one is willing to let me borrow their disc for a few minutes to work with it and see if I can find a solution (using legal software, of course). If I come up with anything (or fail, or fail to get a disc from someone) I will let you know.
