The warning beeper sounds (inside, not outside) while backing up. Why is this?

This is only my opinion. You, the driver, are the intended audience of the beeping because you have a new-style instrument display in front of you and a new-style shift lever.

Until you learn to look up front to see which gear you have selected, the beep will sound in reverse. A small price to pay for saving your bumper, especially if you are driving a car you intend to sell. I observed this on my first test drive. The absence of the beep alerted the salesman to our impending run-in with a light pole in front, which we averted.

So then you learn which way is R and D on the lever. You no longer have to look up at the display (though it's nice to have) and you want that beep turned off. This is an involved process, posted on this website and others.

Will people outside notice if your quiet car is moving forward or backward? They may not, in spite of any annoying beep Toyota could provide. So enjoy your quiet car.

Worst I've done with the shifter so far is sit expectantly in neutral when I thought I was in gear.
Sounds as though you'd favor a motion warning, forward as well as reverse, for the benefit of new drivers.
I'll look into having it disabled -- thanks for the reference.

it is rather easy to disable. Do a search in the knowledgebase, and you will find this:

Make sure to read the comments, as there is some added info there (like being alone in the car) that will help you.

    Good point

I was just wondering the same thing when I spotted this New Japanese Product post (which supposedly enhances fuel economy) in the Prius Main Forum. That should be in the Fuel Economy or Mod Performance Forum instead.

Danny, there are quite a few 'misplaced' posts here & there, if you have time, maybe you should move them into the appropriate places? It's getting a lil' messier as time goes by.

    Thanks.
