What would happen to PriusChat if Danny wasn't around??

Danny has shown a commitment to community which has benefited the members (mostly Prius drivers and people interested in the Prius) while, I presume, making money for himself. He's worked hard to maintain the site technically and he has made wise decisions about policy.

Presumably, PC will not disappear in the near future, since it is a commercial success. But if Danny were unable to continue to operate it, and had to sell, its fate would depend on the new owner: Would it be an individual with Danny's level of commitment to the Prius and hybrid communities? Or would it be a corporation whose executives are answerable to the shareholders and which cares only about maximizing profits?

In other words, I don't think your question has an answer. It all just depends on who was to be the new owner. I wonder what's the market value of a site such as this. If it's $100,000, a young man like Danny, starting out in life, might have little incentive to sell it, seeing rather a long-term income stream and growth potential. If it's ten million dollars, he might be sorely tempted to sell, invest the money, and live a life of leisure. If it's a hundred million, only a very unusual person would refuse to sell.

As for Toyota, I suspect it's in their interest that PriusChat be independently run. That gives it a legitimacy a dependent site would not have.

 

We would form another site called "sheepf***ers.com" and everyone could move over to it. Most of the posts would be the same, without having to deal with any Prius crap.

I agree with Rick, we would have even more Prius-specific discussion, and the moderators would be scolding us for not talking about sheep ...

Seriously, if Danny chose not to continue, and/or sell the site, it would go Tango Uniform. There are only a handful of sites as well run as this one is, and that takes dedication.
