I had an accident with my 6-month old 2008 Prius last week, and there was extensive front end damage (no one was hurt, fortunately). It seems likely the costs will be too high to repair, so I need to buy another car. I can't decide if I should get another Prius or not. This was a minor accident, really, and I'm concerned what would happen if it was a more serious accident. Any experience with front end damage?? Does the Prius just self-destruct easily??
    Thanks.

The Prius is quite safe and it doesn't self destruct, but depending upon the type of accident it can be expensive to repair. There've been several reports of front end collisions and the Prius has done an exceptional job of protecting the passengers IMO.

Modern cars are supposed to self destruct when you hit something head on. The alternative is for the car to survive, but have to hose out the occupants, or what's left of them. You want the car to absorb the energy, not the people inside. Your Prius did what it was designed to do, like any good modern car.

Also, the modern front drive car is so jam-packed with hardware up front that unless they restyle them with a long hood (not the current fave) there is no crumple zone in front of the works. A 10-15 mph tap takes out not only the bumper, but also the headlights, radiator, and probably more. I'd go for a little more length for that security.

I've seen some good discounts on 09 Prius locally. Dealer is now offering an additional $2k off (on top of $1k from Toyota). I missed that by two weeks. :(

The fact you are posting this incident means the Prius did exactly what it was designed to do!!! SAVE YOUR LIFE!!! The reason that you car is so destroyed, and believe me I feel for you, I wonder when my baby will be a target, is all the energy absorbing systems working just as they are supposed to.
The physics were already there, it just took Sir Newton to explain it in a way we all could understand. If its a 2008, you should see a good insurance check, but then you have to pay off what you owe, the rest is down payment.
If the accident was not your fault. It might be wise to speak to a Accident Lawyer and explain the accident. They may help you recover a better amount. You should be compensated for the grief the accident has caused. You did not ask for your car to be destroyed etc!!, and that would help slip you into a 2010. I assume you want another Prius. Its only a couple of months now until 2010 time, and their arrival. If not a 2010, I would think a big sale on 2009's would be in order!!!

Either way you go, GOOD LUCK, let us know what happens!

Sorry to hear about your accident, but glad no one was hurt. Our '08 Prius was also involved in a front-end accident last year. Also with no injuries, and it crumpled in all the right places like it was supposed to. I was sure the insurance co. would total it, but they decided it was repairable. Repairs took a while, but it now looks and runs like new!! Here are a couple pictures so you can compare damage (appearance, anyway) with yours. Good luck with the outcome of yours.
