Windshield replacement from hail damage: included tint band across top. Are they all like this?

I know for sure I requested the exact same windshield I had before, but when I picked up my car I later noticed there's a bluish/black tint across the top. About 4 inches or so. I'm still trying to decide if I'm going to be able to deal with this.

In my last car, the windshield was also replaced and it had the tint as well, but I didn't seem to notice it as much. With the Prius the glass is so slanted forward, which decreases the field of vision, and I think it makes the tint more noticeable.

I assume this is not the OEM glass from Toyota? Are pretty much all aftermarket windshields like this? What should I do?

You are correct your factory windshield does not come shaded.. What company did they work? what brand is your windshield? ULN, or APT is OEM on these cars.. if you have a safelite windshield, you got an aftermarket. No matter what it is, if it has a shade band at the top it is NOT OEM..

for more information you should google aftermarket auto glass.

i am new or I would post a link to a site with good info.

you should call the shop right away and tell them, but honestly you should have never took posession of the car in a non acceptible condition.. & a hail storm could have meant no other option was avalible except you having no windshield, irregardless the shop should have made you aware of the situation.

The glass has some writing in the middle that says "PGW". Also it's called a "Sound Master" as there is supposedly some kind of feature imbedded into the glass that reduces road noise...

I called the shop and told them I would wait a week or so to see if I might actually get used to the tint. They accepted the mistake and is offering to replace it with a non-tint version.

What's odd is that when I was calling around beforehand to get estimates, everyone said the tinted version was much more expensive on the Prius for some reason.

So now I'm worried that if they replace it with the non-tinted glass I'll get something "cheaper".

By the way, total price was $325, so if real OEM is like around $1,000 or something, I'll just settle for aftermarket. I payed for this out of pocket because my deductible is $500.

You don't get free windscreen replacement on your policy? It's pretty standard here. One free windscreen per policy year with no excess (deductable) and no increase in premium. Worth checking your policy.

I'd personally prefer a tinted band across the top of my windscreen, but each to their own. I don't think a clear screen would be a lower cost because it is a poorer quality, it is cheaper because it hasn't got the tinted band.

Good luck with it which ever way you choose to go with it.

Yes I checked the policy beforehand. The only thing free is fixing a rock-chip. Otherwise the deductible applies.

Has anyone heard of PGW glass?

Check again. Look under the "comprehensive" section. It covers things like vandalism, fire etc. usually without deductable and never any insurance points. Comprehensive coverage should not have a deductable for storm damage. Mine even paid for hitting a deer without a deductable or insurance points beng put on my record. Hitting a deer is considered an unavoidable occurance.

PGW is the Pittsburgh Glass Works.

    Hope this helps.

Yes, I double and triple checked- it's not covered for free.
My premiums are low so maybe that's why.

Who is your insurance provider? (PM me if you want)

Speaking of hitting a dear, I was hit by one back in '07. Had to pay $500 deductible for that because repairs were like $1,200. My insurance at the time was Liberty Mutual.

State Farm in AZ offers free glass repair/replacement w/o deductible on their comprehensive policies. That may vary by state, as it wasn't offered when I was in CA. I also didn't go through 3 windshields in CA either ;)
