Well, I have been reading all the posts on the board for the last week and a half. A lot of information on this board! Just purchased a 2005 super white Prius with package #6 (no waiting list...right off the lot). So far I love it and thanks to this board have been able to turn off the annoying backup beep...(don't really understand its function because you can't even hear it outside the car). Still not getting stellar mileage although the info on this site helped to ease my mind a bit. I have mostly short commutes, so I think that may be some of my problem. My first half tank is only 41mpg. I am hoping to improve with time and experience! It is still is a vast improvement over our Armada. Now we will only use that beast when absolutely needed!

    Congratualations on your new purchase.
Welcome to PriusChat! Join your local group and attend some meetups. As I'm sure you've noticed, there's a great group of people on this board and you can get to know them better and make some really good friends at the meetups.

    Now for the bad news:
You're not going to be able to stop smiling for a while. Some people might think you're a little odd that way.
Not everyone wants to talk about your new Prius as much as you do; give them time, they'll come around.

Welcome to the club. There is no secret handshake, though.

Seriously though, don't worry about your MPG so much initially. A couple of things are going on. First, your engine is breaking in. Expect an MPG increase as your system wears a little bit. Some have reported a "second break-in" increase at around 10,000 miles as well. Of course, the other point is that you're learning how to drive your new car in its most optimal way. The MFD display can help 'train' you how to drive more efficiently, and there are a ton of driving tips on this site as well.

    Enjoy

Thanks for the welcome. Yes, I have heard about the mileage improving as the car breaks in. My sister has a 2004, and after 12,000 miles hers is now regularly hitting the 50mpg mark on longer trips. She doesn't really modify her driving for the Prius, so I guess there is hope for me

vprius, there are a few of us who don't believe that the car "breaks in" quite as much as the "driver" breaks in.

Welcome to a more peaceful, relaxed driving style.

I am hoping there is some break in mpg improvement. For any of you that know west Bakersfield traffic, there is no such thing as "relaxed" driving! Surface streets here are 55mph and people regularly go 60mph. If I try to be too relaxed I may end up a victim of road rage! I do try to keep it within reason, but have to keep up with traffic. I try to speed up relatively quickly and coast as much as possible...Prius is a great coaster!
