So, I have a 2001 Prius that needs a new HV battery (the big one in the back). The warranty on the battery ran out right before the battery died (of course) and it's a pricey item. The dealership has offered to buy it back for about 4k (and then they'll put a new battery in it and charge 9K). Seems wrong. Where can I sell it myself besides Craigslist?

9k is the dealership cost for the new battery before giving you the 4k for your dead battery...correct? So...5k for the job?

Have you tried junkyards to see if you can pull one from there to have it installed in yours? Or, wrecked Prius' that you can buy, salvage the battery, and re-sell the wreck for parts?

    Hi Matt,

I believe the OP is saying they will buy his car at $4K, put in the $3K (retail, probably $2.5K wholesale, including labor) battery, and resell the car at $9K, making a $3.5K profit for themselves.

If the car is worth $9K in working order, and needs a $3K service (retail) then the OP should be able to sell it for $6K to somebody who is confident in taking on this repair. And make $2K, rather than the dealer taking that $2K from him.

Not sure if its worth 9K as just bought a 2004 58K miles mint for 10K out the door, maybe about 6 tops?

    Hi Sandy,

That is a hell of a deal. You are going to have about 100K miles service from that car for $10K.

I would take it. A junkyard pack might be quite cheap but now most of them are quite old and not going to last that long. A new pack is going to cost $2500 plus the install and it will still be a first gen Prius. Buy a used 2004+ with the $4000 and the price you would have spent for the repair as a down payment.
