for a better example.. i work construction with my prius.. i get 35 to 40mpg because i'm always toting around people and material. my tires die faster than anyone on this board.. i know prius abuse.. the 2010 is great.. but just as acceptable to wear tear and reduced mpg as gen2.

Just curious, what other automobile were you considering? I cannot think of another comparable auto for the fuel economy and reliability despite the lack of a moonroof. Don't get too hyped into the solar part. It really is just a gimmick with regards to the absurd cost (59 watts in the full sun only???) and I think Toyota just did it for the image aspect.

Ummm, yea, that's kind of what businesses strive for; profits; nothing more nothing less. It all comes down to two simple words: Bottom Line. (Or to lose as little as possible in down economic times to ensure the long term survivability of the company).

Good idea. I'd look at Chrysler (the Sebring is my first choice!), GM, Ford, or any of the English or European autos. All solid, reliable well made vehicles; much more so than Toyota who can't even figure out how to put a moonroof on a car....

That's because they are stupid and they just offer the worst colors that will sell the least...

Yes, only Toyota. Boy are they dumb. You're right. GM, Chrysler, and Ford are doing a bangup job selling tons of autos. I heard they can't even keep anything in stock anymore...

My God, this topic will become, no HAS become as worn out as the signal mirrors.

Toyota knows how we feel about this and has posted about it several times now. I was one of the first bothered by this whole scenario of not being able to get them in a combined package but the topic was raised and we got our answers straight from Toyota as to why it is the way it is and that it will be brought to the engineers attention again. If you were too lazy to search a little bit and read about it a simple post asking why and stating your opionion would have been taken much more seriously than the approach you took.

It's called money. Not everyone will pay for those mirrors (gotta make up the gap between the base price and the Insight, ya know)

Well are you willing to have a lower weight limit ALL the time??

Take the Dodge Caravan for example. Seven 200lb Americans will overload the van  And the Caravan was designed to seat 7 people right? Cargo? what cargo? fuggettaboutit.

Are you gonna complain to Chrysler now that you can't fit 6 fat friends in the van without going over the weight limit?

It's not always about unsprung weight. Gotta keep in mind of the gross vehicle weight too :)

That's an easy problem to solve with the Caravan: just dump the fat friends and make new skinny ones.

As for me, I don't care about the Turn Signal Mirrors, or even the moonroof; I'm waiting for the "Cold Fusion Powered EV" Prius in 2020.

I get a kick out of stuff like this.

People traded in $70k luxury cars for the Gen2 Prius with no moonroof, and this Prius is MUCH more comfortable than the gen2. Plus, now they can get the Lexus HS250h...

I'd like a loaded Prius too, but they'll sell plenty no problem.

I agree completely! Gimmick is the perfect word. I'd love a moonroof and the fan thing seems like a nice creature comfort, but until the solar panel can be made to do something practical, like charge the hybrid battery while the car is parked in the sun, it won't be on my list of must haves. The technology just isn't there yet. And that's fine! This car is a fine example of forward motion even without solar power. Like plug-in, I look forward to seeing this stuff on future cars. In the meantime, I still get a kick-nice person car that's better than just about anything else out there.

Of course, the real reason that there is no solar option with the advance tech package is that, when the 2010 Prius' AI attains sentience and tries to enslave humanity, they'll be almost unstoppable with solar power. We'd have to block out the sun and Prii would start replacing their hybrid batteries with humans! Think of the species, people! We can't let that happen! :D

Toyota "packaging" has been and stil is a mystery - worldwide. On the Prius 2, in Europe, if you'd like to have the backup camera (and the "gadget" IPA), you'll have to settle for the basic stereo and a navigation system which lack a couple of important features currently found even on cheap portable nav systems.

We CAN order a Prius 3 with all the bells and whistles - but if you add the solar roof, the 17" wheels are replaced by 15" ones - a "sacrifice" that I'm personally more than willing to make after having checked out the prices for tires of both sizes, plus the unavailability (in Europe) of all-season 17" tires.

Speaking of weight, and envy, I'd very much like to have your fancy passenger-side wiper arm...... :cheer2:. It's kind of unfair: In Europe the driver can enjoy looking at the standard HUD :D - and the passenger can "enjoy" looking at a lot of unwiped windshield :(.

Until they find a panel of that size that can produce more than 59W, all while not becoming a large RF noise antenna, hybrid battery charging is out of the picture.
