Just got the Bazooka subwoofer installed at CC!

Balance it as you like it. If you feel increasing the bazooka fills in the bass adequately but the mids/highs are drowned out, lower the bass on the EQ, bring up the volume, and adjust bazooka for low end fill-in.

 

I'd lower the factory bass EQ settings on the display, so the factory speakers don't have to carry the bass load, for which they will thank you!

The sub is now carrying most of the bass for you and is designed to do so. Factory 6.5" speakers are not subwoofers.

I've lowerd my bass setting to one click below half and let the subs do all the bass. I have the basic stereo (non-JBL) and the two subs I put under the front seats have made a HUGE difference in sound quality. Not window-rattling bass but a nice solid low end. Enjoy the zen of Prius drivng with the new sound.

 

YBMV (your bass may vary). Actual BPM (bass per mile) for cars in this class get between 4 and 20. Actual bass will depend on many varied factors out in the real world.

Okay, all nonsense aside, we all perceive (sp?) sound/music differently. Add to that, your system is the JBL. Mine is not, thus bass/EQ settings will be different and should be adjusted to what you think is good sounding. What works for my set-up may not coincide with JBL.

There are many tracks I listen to that rock in my system. Others, not so much. That's why I installed a 'bass knob' to control the signal level going to the bass amp. That way, it's fully adjustable right on the dash for every track. Another 2 cents worth...

 

Tide - A good place for a sub box is in the secret compartment under the hatch floor. You don't lose any open cargo space, and the sub is not visible. Also, the bass frequencies transmit clearly through the floor, even with a heavy carpet mat over it. There's no difference in sound quality or volume with the floor open or closed and covered with a mat. Strange.

 

I've decided to go with a bazooka setup myself. My car arrives on Wednesday so I want to have all the equipment ready to go and install. I'm relatively proficient when it comes to electronics so I think I'll try to do the install myself. I have the JBL system in my Prius. Which bazooka is recommended for the hidden compartment under the hatch floor? I'm assuming there is a specific speaker that will fit better than the rest. What exactly would I need to install it correctly? I assume I'll need to run a 12V lead from the battery (on ACC), a ground, left speaker out and right speaker out. Is this all easily accessibly to the hidden hatch area? I'm probably getting a little ahead of myself being that I haven't received the car yet. But I do know the sound is not acceptable so adding bass is a must. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Thanks for the link. I was actually looking for something that could fit either under the deck or under the seat. I don't want to lose any cargo space or make loading anything in the car more difficult. I thought the bazooka could fit under the deck? Maybe I was wrong. Would my only alternative be the Kenwood sub setup?

 

kev and tc - any way you can post pics of your installation, and specifics on what you installed? i'm getting my prius next month and will be adding a sub... looking for good ideas & want to keep it out of the way. the pic in the thread above would not work for me.

If you want a subwoofer that will fit under the passenger seat take a look at the Kenwood Mini-Subwoofer. I just had it installed and it made my standard Prius stereo sound a whole lot better.

I'm hoping to find a way to mount (maybe two smaller) subs in the rear panel on the hatch. No loss of luggage room, and a small chamber for bass reflex. Not sure if I can find a pair to fit, or if they would survice the hatch slamming, but it's a thought.

ifogel, have you heard the bazooka? How much of a difference does the Kenwood sub make? Let's say the original sound system (on a scale of 1-10) was a 2 in bass response. How would you rate it AFTER the Kenwood was installed? I used to have an Insight with a "John Wayland" sound system. I think it utilized an 8" subwoofer in a custom enclosure. The bass was AWESOME. Won't set off alarms or anything but it would rattle your head pretty good. I wonder if anyone on this board has had an Insight with the John Wayland sound system installed? Long shot, I guess.

 

I've set my Kenwood to deliver a reasonable bottom to the rock, blues, pop and vocal music I usually listen to. It makes the standard stereo with my Ipod attached using Ipod2Car sound full and rich with each insturment identifyable across the stereo stage.
But it can be pumped up to thump the car enough to make you noticed at a stop light or driving down the road. I haven't listened to it very long at the big bass levels so I don't know if it distorts much at high levels or not.
What I do know is that anyone in the passenger seat gets a massage with music if I turn it up.
