Personally, I wish the VWs were more reliable and cost of owning were lower. I wouldn't mind owning a TDI and a hybrid.

I notice all of these comparisons are to:
    • NHW20 - VW TDI commercials
    • NHW20 Touring - Edmunds
This makes sense as the NHW20 has been available since 2004. But within a fortnight, the ZVH30 will be on show room floors and are already making miles on USA highways ... in owner hands. All of these NHW20 comparisons have just become useless and I really see these as an attempt to preserve their base.

We're seeing little evidence that VW TDI advocates are hangin' out here trying to snipe some customers. In fact, the VW TDI advocacy web sites, which includes Edmunds, have been throughly answered with facts and data. Having seen how Prius attacks galvanize Prius owner responses, I would caution against any 'visits' to VW TDI forums ... especially because they have no useful information about our Prius.

    LOL!! LOVE THE COMMERCIAL

the last line is as true as it gets and the VW guy said it

"thats cool" (referring to the sound a Pri makes)

and besides, in my 2010, i am just about at the stated figure in the commercial and i have to say, that at 2009 miles, i may not be fully broken in yet!!

I thought this commercial was hilarious. The first time I saw it I could not stop laughing. Who would want a car that goes VROOOOOOOM when you could have a car that barely makes noise? I'd choose the latter, because my 1999 Camry is SOOOO loud sometimes I can't even stand it!!! Haha... in conclusion, this commercial is really funny.

It mentions Jetta's 58 mpg world record, but doesn't mention that this record was crushed three months later by a competing hybrid -- Wayne Gerdes & crew did 68 mpg under more difficult conditions, in a Civic Hybrid.

I don't care which hybrid it was, because this ad does not mention Prius by name, only by picture and as 'a hybrid'.

I first saw the commercial a couple of weeks ago. I'm not offended, I thought it was funny and I appreciate the air time.

Some people want to hear that "vrooommmm"....maybe just as many don't.

But if you ask me which is more effective in selling cars, I'll say that this VW commercial is a ton better than the Harmony commercials we've seen for the Prius.

Vrooooom or a Pansy car seems to be the choice if you go by the commercials of both car co's!

Ah, the smell of Diesel in the morning.....

Can't wait to try my '10 off the line in power mode against a buddies TDI... plus I can sneak up on him in EV mode in the parking lot!

Negative publicity has backfired a number of times in the past. You'd think that they'd realize drawing attention to Prius promotes curiosity toward it. People wonder why it's considered so much of a threat to the competition. Prius owners like me love it! I'm happy to provide lots of real-world data showing how realistic of a choice it is.

Why bother with so-called "clean" diesel when you can buy a very appealing hybrid instead?

How is it legal to mention 58 mpg in that ad?

I thought this is why the EPA developed standardized ratings...

You definitely have a point there. I don't know too much about the TDI and I actually thought that the 58MPG they quoted was the actual EPA highway mileage. I have a feeling that VW is going to be forced to remove that ad due to false advertising.

Fuel for that TDI will cost approximately 10% more than for a Prius. Maintenance will be more. Noise will be more. Depreciation will be more. Reliability will be...less. Oh well, 1 out of 5 isn't THAT bad.

Reminds me of the new Chevy commercial where Howie Long says "Honda does do one thing we can't" and then shows a lawn mower.

That's how you're going to try and sell cars?

A REALLY, REALLY GOOD POINT! According to VW's web site, the TDI gets 41mpg Hwy. A far cry from the Prius!

I didn't watch the commercial, but did consider the Jetta TDI Sportwagen. It wasn't loud (obviously wasn't silent like the Prius though) and diesel when I was looking was 25 cents less per gallon than regular gas. I'd still like a wagon vs. hatchback. I like the clean-looking interior vs. the bridge console. I liked the heated leather-ette seats (function of leather without the cost). It's just a totally different car. If I drove more highway miles, it might have won out, but I am about 50-60% city. And yes, then there is the VW (un-) reliability and TDI cost of ownership. But people love their VWs, that is why there is a TDI Club similar to Priuschat. You wouldn't believe what they say about the Prius over there :)

I would. I'm a member a ton of racing forums and I know just what kind of young knuckledraggers frequent fan sites and I can just imagine what the uneducated portion of the site says about the Prius. ;)
