I hope you don't come out and find a Hummer parked on top of your Prius...!

I really don't understand why anyone would want to convey potentially inflammatory messages via a license plate, window decal, or bumber sticker. But that's just me. I can envision some redneck idiot (yeah, I know this isn't politically correct) doing something horrible to your car in a parking lot in response to your plate.

I agree with the above, IF that plate is approved I think I'd ask if you could change your mind....just not bright to antagonize.

I really was loving the idea of "I8A SUV" (an homage to Steve from 90210's Corvette with the "I8A 4RE" plate, which I always thought was pretty clever) but decided against it because I didn't want to seem anti-SUV (they serve a purpose, just not a purpose I have). Think I'll go with some form of "HYBRID", "HYBR1D", "HY8RID", whatever isn't taken. That's pretty safe.

My first choice was "DUAL NRG" but I went with "GEEK TOY" because my wife said that fit me better.

Due to constraints on availability and plate space (5 characters), I went with PR1US. PRIUS was taken, and HY8RD was too weird-looking.

You guys only get 5 chars in FL? Wow.

I think CA is going to need to modify their schema or start moving to 8 characters before long - we just have too many cars.

Wow, what we could do with 8 characters though :)

Normal plates get six, but some specialty plates (colleges and whatnot) only get five. They changed the design of the normal plates recently (clump of oranges and a plug for myflorida.com) and they're AWFUL (I think) so I coughed up extra for a specialty plate.

Just ordered the Illinois environmental plate with PZEV 1.

The plate comes with a small "E" (for environmental) and an image of the state bird - the cardinal - so, the number of characters is limited to 5.

I'll post an image when it arrives.

While I have had mixed feelings about the plate (out of a mild concern), it really is intended more as humor, with a subtle message, than as antagnoistic. At the end of the day, these are hunks of metal we run around in and I hope people don't take them that seriously on any side. But I also think there is a little bit of a cultural issue here...I am in the Bay Area, and here, such a statement is pretty middle of the road (so to speak).

All that said, I think the statement is important. When someone, who doesn't need to, drives a polluting, resource consuming, lethal weapon on the roads, we all pay for it. When I drive my Prius, we all benefit from it. If do not believe that expressing that sentiment is wrong, in fact, since humans thrive on acceptance of their values, it can actually have a positive impact. I dont think that makes SUV owners (I am sure many of you) bad people, I just think many people who bought one, made a bad choice for the rest of us, and I am willing to say it. Isn't free *and* active expression one of the cornerstones of an effective democratic society?

    Whew.

Now, if I can just figure out how to justify why I fly an airplane... :D

Seems to me that your plate is a little short sighted. In the next year or so, there will be at least 2 SUV's, which will be Hybrids (the Lexis and the Hylander), both getting upwards of 30mpg and will aslo be (better) for the environment.

I have a 4Runner, and will get my Prius in about 2 months (I hope). Personally, your plate means nothing to me. If you like it, keep it, more power to ya.

I try to avoid negitive people, they always seem to want to pull people down to their level, in order to make themselves feel worth while. It's a free country here in the USA, do what you wish. But a positive message, would carry a lot more weight, at least in my book.

Enjoy your ride, I'm looking forward to mine in a few months. Until then, I will continue to drive my reliable, well built, functional, 4Runner.

I'm sorry, I wouldnt normally reply, but that was pretty funny -- read what you typed again. Actually, I am relentlessly positive in general. But I will work hard and some day aspire to make it up to "your level" Mr Positive, even if I have to sacrifice my feelings of worthwhileness to do so.

I went with "NO PLUG" since thats usually the first question people ask about the car.

    Bananaslug,

Please accept my appoligy. I did not intend to imply that you are a negitive person. I thought I had it in the proper tense, directed at other "negitive people", these are the same people who may not find the humor in your license plate. I would truely hate to see anything unfortunate happen to you or your car by these types of people. I try to avoid them by trying not to become a target, or putting myself in a position which they may want to take out their frustration on me or my property.

I have custom license plates on both of my cars. My 4Runner has the plate "Medved" (which is my last name) and my Sports Car is "83 Supra"
I have had a number of people come up to me in parking lots, asking about both of them. They are a conversation peice, just today, a fellow employee asked if I was on a road last week near the mall, because she saw my name, but couldn't place it for a while.

Like you, I too, try to "keep the shiney side up", and look on the bright side of things. But I am also aware of "The Dark Side" of people.

Good luck with your Prius. I am sure many will find your plates humorus.

Thanks Medved, I appreciate the explanation accept the apology and retract any cynicism in my reply..:)
I do like to see the humor in things..one of the ways I thought about it is...how would I feel if I saw a Hummer with a bumper sticker.."HA HA Compact" (which if you think about it would be rather a more negative emotion..i.e. I can kill you)...and I know I would chuckle, I certainly wouldn't feel the need to either vandalize the vehicle or it's driver...even if I didnt think their vehicle choice conformed to my ethical code.

Anyway should be an interesting test of human nature. Have a great day...

    Bananaslug,

Glad we got that straighten out. :)

    I am thinking about getting,

    NiMH PWR

In Ohio we can get 7 characters with a space. I think that would be cool. :)

I race remote contoled cars, and am very familar with charging NiCD, and NiMH batteries. Not sure if everyone would get it, unless you knew a little bit about batteries. but I think they might catch on. I don't think I could get the i to be lower case though.

I have about 2 months before my car comes in. Actually that timing will be pretty good. I am going in for a hip replacement at the end of April, and won't be able to drive for another month after that. Then I will still have another few weeks off to heal, and will be able to play with my new car as much as I want.

    Catch ya later.
