hi Andy! welcome to priuschat :)

your prius should have come with a front plate holder hanging out in a plastic bag in the luggage compartment, under the hatch floor. if it's not there, go complain to your dealer and have them get you one. free, of course ;)

Try M6 1.0 Pitch, can't remember the length. I put on a clear plate cover and had to get longer screws.

As far as screws to put the plate onto the holder, you can go in an auto shop and get screws that usually say "foreign" (as opposed to domestic) and they'll fit the bill. Get anti-theft ones, I always considered them worth the little bit more. If you're talking about holder to car, they should give them to you.

Did the dealer pre-drill the holes for you? If not, the size screw is not critical. Get rustless.

In my thread "prep clowns" I complained that the TX dealer drilled big holes in the front bumper in spite of my entreaties not to do so - UGLY, distorted bumper sightly; I was mad, NM requires no front plate. I think the holder is ugly too - big black plastic thing.

I think the plate would look better (and be more aerodynamic) screwed directly to bumper, using shorter screws (I don't know what's back there, because of the new dams blocking access). You will save about a gallon of gas over the life of the car! Hey - ever little adds up. :)

i was talking about the screws to screw the plate onto the frame.

the holes from the frame to the car were not drilled, only the indentions that i just screwed the screw in without drilling.

Finally someone posted my first question with a Prius. I had to call the dealer to find out the holder was in my car the whole time. Boy did I feel smart :)

neither does NC, the state where we bought the car. still got one though. which is good, considering it's registered in a state that technically requires front plates. and we will be needing it when we go back...

One inch stainless metal screws should work. The bumper cover is plastic about 1/8" thick. The dimples are where the plate holder attaches, closer together than the holes in the license plate. You'd be screwing the plate directly to the plastic bumper cover, so be careful not to strip the holes. The plastic plate holder is held on with sheet metal screws, but has machine screw holders to hold the license plate to the holder. Safer if you have to change the plate for any reason.

Glad to see you found it Andy. If it wasn't there? I'd have given you mine. I don't like the "Flat" face on it! Makes me feel like I'm pushing a sail, sideways ... and it takes away from the contour of the aerodynamics (pickyou-nie, I agree :D ). Some state don't require a front plate, but Ours is registered in CA, so what I did, was to "form fit it". Got a rounded surface similar to the front bumper and bent it into the same curve as the bumper! hey! that might get me another 1/8 of 1% better mileage on a windy day!

I bought plates in a state where front plates are NOT required, and live in a state where they are - so I should be able to call the dealer and have them send me the frame? (just trying to understand...)

It comes with the car free if you live in a two-plate state. I would contact your local dealer and see if they can get you one. Might not be free, but at least you will have one.
