My first test drive on a Prius

    Yesterday I drove a Prius for the first time... it's really a great car!
    It's really comfortable to drive in the silence and with a very high mileage.

    On Prius it's already all said.

    I looked on the bottom of the steering wheel and I saw a button, I asked to the selling agent what's that button and he answered it is for the key fob disabling...

    It's perhaps the on/off button for the smart key car antenna?

    Yes, It is to turn off the smart key for long periods of non use. This way the battery won't run down while on vacation etc.

    Thank you very much for your answers, now it's clear.
    There is another thing I don't understand:
    The selling agent told me not to keep the key fob near a cell phone...
    but when I walk around I have always my cell phone turned on in my bag or pocket and (If I'll buy the Prius) also the key fob!!!

    There is perhaps also a button to turn off the fob?
    I don't understand.

    And so: if I am miles away from home and the fob battery runs out... how can I do to use the car? The car can run with a fob without battery?

    I keep my keys in the left pocket and my cell phone in the other. Have done this since I bought the car in 2005 and never had an issue. So don't worry about it. ;)

    There is a button to turn off the SKS (Smart Key System). This will disable the feature that allows you to open the doors without the sensor in the door handle automatically unlocking them for you. With the SKS turned off you treat the Prius like a normal car without SKS. I.E use the key to unlock the door and such. This feature is useful for storing the car for long periods without driving it to recharge the tiny 12v auxilary battery. The SKS system is always actrive otherwise and will slowly drain the 12v batery.

    Simply insert the FOB into the dashboard receptical to the right of the steering column.

    Just to understand well:
    I close the car with the fob OK.
    Fob runs out.
    I open the car using the metallic key (I think it's inside the fob like VW)
    I put the fob and go home
    I exit from the car and can close it once more using the metallic key.
    It's OK?

    Since I have never ran out of battery in my FOB I cannot say this is exactly how it works but that seems correct. You should refer to your owners manual to ensure my information is correct. I am very familiar with how the vehicle behaves when you turn the SKS system off but have never experienced the scenario you described. :)

    Yes, that sounds right. Don't forget to take the fob, too. It is possible to leave the car locked but still running.

    I suppose nothing should surprise me anymore, but really: How do people get to be that stupid? You'd think natural selection would have taken effect before surfer dude got his licence.

    LKA = lane keep assist

    so the TS got ON the prius
    and then that video from the guy running into a tree..

    so he did not drive the prius into a tree ... than he got the prius with LKA.
