ScanGauge II first connection READY or ON?

    Does the car need to be in READY mode or just ON mode to initialize the Scangauge II? Trying to save a few drops of fuel. :) Thanks!

    It has to be ON for the SGII to recognize the Prius. It might take a couple times of turning the car On and Off before it grabs it...at least it was that way for me.

    Also, because your fill totals are going to be all over the map (due to the inflatable baldder) your instant mpg and tank mpg numbers are also going to change tank to tank. On one tank you might be at 60 mpg and the next tank be at 55 mpg on the SGII...but at the same MFD mpg...so guage your results off the MFD for the most accurate tank mpg (minus 1-2%) and use the SGII for instant feedback while driving.

    Shouldn't at least some of the readings display when the car is READY, voltage for one?

    FWIW according to the Bentley Repair Manual, Toyota's OBDII scanner works when the Prius is in IGN-ON mode (Power button twice w/o foot on brake) for servicing the brakes at least. Why not try the SGII with IGN-ON first to see if it works? Oh, and don't forget please don't stay in IGN-ON playing with your new gadget for too long as you'll be draining the Aux 12v battery.

    Another item while you're hooking up your SG: Be sure to set the SG for hybrid mode. Otherwise, the SG will shut down when the ICE shuts off.

    I have the most basic question about the scanGauge. If I stay in the IGN-ON mode too long when I am programming, will I not drain the 12v battery? Is there a good way for a newbe to program it (probably taking more time then he should) without risking draining the battery? Surely there has to be a good way to do that.

    Thanks for any help.

    My ScanGaugeII (4.05) will power up with the car off if I hit the bottom right hand button. I do this some time to check the 12V battery voltage after sitting for a while. Of course most of the gauges are 0 at this time.

    As for doing the original initializing and XGauge programming I chose to leave mine in Ready mode so not to drain the 12V battery too hard. In Ready mode the HV battery is supplying the 12V devices and not the 12V battery. In IGN-ON the 12V battery is supplying all of the 12V devices so you need to be careful using this mode.

    It took more time than I thought to program all of the optional XGauges.

    If you are just programming X-Gauges then I don't think the car needs to be on at all. I *think* the same goes with all other settings but not 100% sure. Hope this helps a bit. Good luck!

    You are correct that the programming and settings can be done with the car off. I just prefer to test each XGauge after editing to make sure I have not made a mistake. Then move to the next one.

    Thanks to jdcollins5 and 2009prius. You are both right. The scangaugeII (4.05) turns on when the lower right button is pressed. Information can be entered/edited and saved in that mode. The Prius can be put in the Ready mode for testing. My first two X-gauges worked great!

    Another question. If btv is 222 volts and CSS is 0.0, can I feel good about my HV battery pack with 75k miles?

    to be sure about everything, the car should be on Ready so as not to confuse the SGII. I was setting some xgauges before on "ON" and the lcd screen started showing gibberish characters. i asked them about it and they advised that the car should be on Ready mode for the SG to work properly. :)

    Glad to know it worked out. The total voltage or the dsc doesn't really tell us much about the health of the HV battery. If you haven't suffered from decreased MPG then the HV battery is probably OK. To do a more thorough check one would need to set up Torque or PriiDash or Techstream to log data and analyze.

    Concerning the gibberish on the screen, those of us with rev 4.05 had also seen this when editing existing XGauges. If you go back and edit your last XGauge and see additional zeroes on the end of your first parameter, this indicates an issue with the data. Linear Logic has indicated that they have seen this problem if the cursor is extended beyond the last digit in CAN applications such as ours. The only way that I have found to reset the gibberish was to reset to default values and do another initialization. All of your XGauges are saved but you have to start over with your trip info and tank refills.
