I know there have be some discussions about the new Prius Nav system. The question posed here is specific to the visibility of the Nav screen when driving in day light.

Is there a problem with glare in general on the Screen? Are the on screen buttons and symbols visible during various lighting conditons during the day?

    Post your thoughts here.

The Nav Screen sits lower on the dash (one of the benefits of the very same center console I have said I don't really like), so I've noticed less glare. I'd like to say "no glare" but that isn't the case. At the same time, I haven't had a problem viewing the Nav screen due to glare.

Regardless, one of the BEST things about the new Nav system is not that it is placed lower in the car, but that it calls out street names as you approach. In my 2007, I'd hear "Right turn in three-tenths of a mile," and I'd wonder whether that was the third, fourth or fifth street coming up. The 2010, on the other hand, spouts: "Right turn in three-tenths of a mile on Washington Street." Glare doesn't matter quite so much in that scenario.

I've only entered a destination 1 time with my 2010 and I don't remember it calling out street names. I'll have to try it again to see whats going on with it

Sorry! Please let me clarify! It won't call out ALL street names, but it will call out many. The Nav in my 2007 called out Interstate Highways and some U.S. or State Highways, but I NEVER recall hearing it call out a city street. I can tell you that when I drove through downtown Joliet, Illinois last week, the Nav system really helped keep me on U.S. 30 as the highway jogged through various downtown city streets. The voice wasn't saying "Stay on U.S. 30" or "Turn right on U.S. 30" -- it was using the street names as they were posted at the corners. A VERY welcome addition!

I wonder how it would do with the Native American side of my village. I live on the corner of Shabwasung and Nagonaba, just up the street from Wakazoo. I'd like to hear it pronounce those names.

I miss that "text-to-speech" feature on my 2009 Nav system. My Garmin has it, and it comes in handy. Of course, the pronunciation is often a bit unique :)

There has been some report of glare, but I spoke with the folks at PriusHoods yesterday and they are waiting on me to pick up my 2010 Prius this afternoon to make measurements for a new Navigation Hood. We'll have it in the PC Shop as soon as it moves into production.

With the Nav/Backup Camera screen mounted on the console instead of the dash, in most instances glare should be less than on the Gen II.

But if you have the sunroof and the sunroof is open, I suspect that on a sunny day the new screen may be just as susceptible to glare -- and in some instances more susceptible than the Gen II's.

I'm not a big fan of the screen shade on MFD's, cameras, portable tv's, etc. Because of their design, I don't think that they prevent glare appreciably except in the rarest of circumstances.

If the glare is a problem for you, you can test the efficacy of those aftermarket screen shades by building your own with paper, neoprene, or anything that's handy. You might even decide that your DIY shade is good enough. Here's what I did with some tape and 75 cents worth of neoprene:

As for pronunciation, it does a best guess, but botches "Waddell" (emphasis on the 2nd syllable), and uses an "American" pronunciation for "La Cometa" (it uses short "e", correct is long "e"). Either way, it's enough to get the point and FAR better than the Gen 4 system.

Is there a way to Change the Coordinate Input method from DD MM SS to DD MM.mmm? Also, is there a way to input a batch of "POIs" on the 2010 PriusV

Also, Where can someone Download a FULL Owners manual for the 2010 PriusV?

To answer the latter part of your question, techinfo.toyota.com - $15 for 2 days will get you access to any manual they publish. You have to download/save section by section.

Have not had problem with glare on the nave screen.

My problem is with seeing the regular hybrid display on the dash.. I find that hard to read when it is sunny out..

Im going to have to agree, Its not horrible but its so much easyer to read at night. The only problem I have had with glare on the nav screen is when it was in direct sun from the side, but even that was not bad.

I found that voice recognition has a hard time understanding me say "Dining" it will display everything except dining, but saying "I'm Hungry" works perfect. All restaurant Icons come up. I have been finding some restaurants being shown where there are none, in some cases still forest or woods. It will be interesting if some of those show up in the next ten years. ;) It is the car of the future.

Excellent! I really can't stand the frequent glare on my 2006 MFD. But I sucked it up after it appeared to me that the aftermarket products wouldn't do much -- they don't protrude very far. Now Boo's homemade device looks very nice and looks like it would be more effective than the existing aftermarket hoods.

On a sunny day I can't see anything on the Nav display, even radio channels. Tried the contrast settings but no improvement. Is there some setting I'm missing?

Yes, the "setting" where you bend a cardboard box and tape it on your dash to make some shade for the screen. OR you could buy the almost useless dark smokey plastic shade from a lot of sources but be prepared to customize it to make it fit and to darken the part closest to the dash so it doesn't leak light. Just a bad design because other nav screens I have seen are legible in harsh sunlight. In the Prius, even filtered light makes it almost unusable.

Do you drive with your headlights on such that the display is on night mode? If so, then click the dash lights knob on the left to high and you'll see everything fine most of the time. Then if you get glare, just turn around and drive in the other direction!
