New VW TDI Commercial disses PRIUS

    My TDI doesn't drink any gas:D

    Someone else was commenting on BioDeisel, Biodiesel goes straight into the tank, mix at any ratio with diesel, no engine mods required.
    It's true, if you are in freezing weather then you should use a blend like B20 or you may have some starting issues. Other issues with BioD is that it cleans out youe fuel system, may need to change fuel filter once you start using, I never had that problem.
    There is also the option of running straight veggi oil, this is probably what the poster was thinking, $1000 mod, second tank and you can run oil with no processing, disadvantage, costly mod, more susceptible to cold weather, reports of coking injectors, advantage fuel cost per gallon $.00

    Thanks for the info on Terraco. I'll give them a call next time I need some oil. I went to the St Vital Wal Mart in early May and that is when I noticed that they did not seem to have the XD-3 0w-40 anymore. The same seems to have happened at the Wal Mart in Brandon. I hope it was just me missing it both times and will check again when I need more oil, but am not getting my hopes up.

    I'm using Shell Rotella T 5W-40 full synthetic and change it at the 10K mile interval recommended by VW. It meets VW's requirements for my 2003 1.9L TDI.

    My father uses Shell Rotella T 15W-50 full synthetic in the commercial trucks. Same brand, different weight. I should have been more specific.

    Wouldn't know as I put him on ignore long ago to improve the signal to noise ratio. It was a big improvement.

    I'll keep that in mind for the future. His SNR in this thread has been pretty good though and it might be worth checking out what he said.

    It's one thing if they keep the tag on the shelf, but the shelf is empty. If the tag is missing too, that's a bad sign

    Terraco has pallets of the stuff, just not at Wally prices

    You should be good. It's a very good oil, most of the HD oils are

    I'm unaware of any heavy duty motor in North America (Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Mack, Cat, IH/Sterling, etc) that requires a 15W-50 oil. I do know that Mobil used to offer a Mobil 1 in 15W-50

    Depending on temp, most HD engines used in North America require a 15W-40, 10W-30, 0W-30/0W-40, or 5W-40. Most HD oils are available in straight weights too

    The heavier straight weights, 40 and 50, are sometimes used in HD transmissions, and in two-stroke Detroit Diesel motors

    The 12V battery is about half the size of a normal car but it costs over $100 from the dealer; probably due to low quantity production. Some use Optima yellow top when they replace but it requires some customization to fit properly.

    If you are asking about the HV battery, I can get it for about $2,000 brand new shipped. If I do ever need to replace it, I would probably buy a used pack.

    Which year is your TDI? VW dealyed the introduction of the 2009 TDI due to the durability of the complex and expensive exhaust system required by the federal law (8 years / 80k miles). Once your warranty ran out and your car does not pass inspection, how much does it cost to replace the exhaust system?

    But doesn't the 3rd Gen Prius have better 0-60 times?

    Also diesel at 58mpg is not the same cost as gasoline at 58mpg. The ad is misleading.

    My guess is that Shawn put me on ignore after this (linked) thread escalated to the point that I received a warning from the administrator and had my post edited. (I assume he was warned as well.)

    I totally don't understand this entire thread. The commercial is funny, I chose a Prius, others chose a different car, the TDI being a fine example of many. I am very different from you...all of you, so my choices are based on a different set of criteria. I like the TDI (in theory, haven't had the opportunity to drive one yet, they weren't on the marking when I bought both Prius cars in 2008,) I like my Prius, I love my '92 Eclipse. And after all that, I don't feel the need to explain my reasoning to anyone! :)

    The TDI is a great car, the Prius is a great car, my Eclipse is a great car. Like all cars, they have pros and cons. How you weight those differences determines which car you buy. Does that mean it's better? Probably for YOU, but maybe not for ME. Can we let this thread die yet? :)

    A while back, I had a long, boring, technical discussion of how an oil refinery works. The costs are different there too, especially when you throw ULSD into the equation

    Prius would go a mile if diesel is in the tank, until HV battery runs out. ;)

    people like you make me wish I had my 1981 or 1982 ( I owned both over the years ) Toyota longbed Diesel pickup :D still so I could pull in front of you and leave you in a cloud of soot :rolleyes::p:D. I guess you have never experienced sulfur dioxide coming out your exhaust or from other gasoline powered vehicles.........:eek:The current TDI-CR are just as clean as your hybrid , cleaner when you calculate the cost to the environment of you batteries so get over yourself .

    And even though , just because the PMs are not listed on your Prius it still puts them out when the gasoline engine is running . It puts them out in ultra-fine form that can kill you . Larger diesel PMs fall quickly to ground , in hours at most causing little if any health impact . While the ultra-fine PMs that do come out of all gasoline powered engines , even your hybrid can stay aerosolized for weeks even months or longer depending on where you are .

    And the exhaust coming out of your neighbors loophole suv or pickup PMs in the Ktons , CO & ground level O3 produced will do harm to you far sooner than any auto diesel ever will . people like you are the ones that give Prius owners such a bad name , which by the way for the most part I don't agree with .

    Toyota has had their share of issues with reliabillty over the last 2-3 decades . VWs are no worse or no better than Toyota when it comes to reliability .

    Where they do seperate is on shop training . Toyota is pretty good , not great about teaching their shops to fix issues that come up . 22R failures , brake problems , Camry alignment problems from the factory ( I know of cars that have had all four tires replaced under warranty as many as 3 times in the first 25k miles ) , fuel pump failures & engine gum up issues over the last couple of years leading to the current short oil change interval and mandatory use of synthetic oils are just a couple issues Toyota has had fleet wide . The list could go on to fill the page .

    Where VW has never been so good about keeping their shops up with repair issues . Audi is better about this so I've never understood why VW is so bad about this . That is where they differ , not on reliability overall but how they deal with issues .

    And on the CRs being unreliable , not so I've yet to hear of a CR failure yet . The DSGs which have nothing to do with the CRs have had shifting issues and DMFs problems but not the CRs . Get a 6 spd man and that issue goes away ......

    It is raving lunatics like you that give reasonable diesel owners a bad name. Can't you contain your rants about fictitious "loophole vehicles" to one thread? Get a grip man. :crazy:

    No he can't. He has been continuously ranting about "loophole vehicles" in another thread. He throws out crazy numbers like these gasoline vehicles put out 70 x the pollution of a 2000 diesel but won't post numbers or even give an example of what he means buy a "loophole vehicle". The man just wants to rant.
