Anybody know if you can add GPS navigation, voice controls, bluetooth, etc. package after the fact?

I have a 2005 Prius without all that stuff and may consider having it put in if it is not too late.

    Thoughts?

I believe it would be cheaper to trade your car in. You would have to get a new steering wheel, the nav unit, microphone and the buttons around the LCD at the very least to have it installed. I am sure it's more than $3K + labor. A cheaper solution would be to get a Garmin or similar dashtop unit.

You could get away without the steering wheel part, but you definitely need the MFD replaced witht the correct one, then of course there's the NAV ECU, and the wiring. NAV requires tapping into AVC, sending RGBS to MFD, intercepting (or adding) a speaker, mute signal to the radio, reverse and speed, and of course B+, ACC, IG1, and ground.

I understand the Garmin 3600 is superior to the Nav in Pkg 6, so I'm planning to use that. The map updates are considerably less expensive too.

How much are the Toyota map updates?

Interesting comment on the Garmin - I'm trying to find some practical comparasions between the built-in nav and the Magellan RoadMates or the Garmins, but haven't found any ...

    jfh3,

A friend of mine in Atlanta (a Real Estate agent) bought a Garmin 3600 for navigating around the metro area and he loves it! He was driving to an appointment and called me on his cell so I could "listen" to it in action.

He had programmed the destination and was following the Garmin's directions and then intentionally made an incorrect turn. Withing a second or so the Garmin pipes up with "Route Error.... Recalculating.... Turn right at next intersection" That took him back on track to the destination!!!

    Amazing!

I have a Garmin 3600. I don't have enough experience with the Toy Navi yet but, as usual, both seem to have their ups and downs...

The Garmin can be used anywhere you have GPS signal, eg., a rental car, friends-SO vehicle, on a hike, and so forth. Plus it is a full-featured Palm PDA if that's important to you.

You'll spend about $500.00 or so (US) for it and a car adapter thingy.

You can't talk to it, but is does talk to you. "Off-route....recalculating". Man, I heard that a few times!!

Thanks DanMan32. Obviously, this is more than I want to do myself.

Curious whether anyone has had the Toy Nav added after the fact.

Not sure if you can just replace those items, or whether there are significant differences between the BI and BC that would make it impossible.

I'm interested in this too. How frequent are they, and how expensive? Besides the map updates, are the software upgrades usually pretty good too?

I have a 2007 pkg 3, what would be required to add the Navigation to this model down the road?

When i hit the Map button on the steering wheel it just says "external unit not connected"

Does this just mean I need to add a GPS receiver unit? If so, does anyone know where to find one?

    thanks

The Prius NAV does this as well.

wow, this thread is 2 years old!

err, no it's more complicated than that. You're much better off purchasing a portable unit. If you really really really wanted a conversion, I think I've posted a link on PC somewhere linking to a forum where someone was attempting to add factory navigation. No idea how that turned out.

Go to clublexus.com, go to their forums and search the IS forums for it.

Yeah, I just searched and found it. Figured it would be better than starting up another thread when this one would serve the same purpose :)

More digging has led me to the same conclusion, just get a Garmin and be done with it. I have a 320 in my Volvo and depending on sales and moods at Fry's they are down to $169-199 these days. Thats definitely cheaper than trying to get the Nav for the prius.

    Thanks for the input

Also check the prices at garmin & amazon. When I was looking around recently I was surprised by who had the cheaper prices.

that's good. You're setting a good example by using the Search function first :) .

Indeed. I just thought of another option if you wanted to use the MFD. Garmin makes this "black box" GPS system which uses the MFD screen. It has a remote control so it's not touch screen but it's close enough.

Search up Garmin black box on PriusChat. Someone has added it before (I forgot the name).

I tried to use the search function, so I hope I haven't missed a newer thread somewhere else. Just curious though, have things changed with regard to the 2010 Prius (Gen III)? I have a IV and I'd really like to have factory nav and a backup camera. Is it prohibitively expensive to add a navigation package "after the fact" to a 2010? Thanks!
