New FBI reports released today show that the grenade thrown at Pres. Bush was indeed a live grenade and landed within 100 feet of the President, but "simply failed to function due to a light strike on the blasting cap.''

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) - An agent for the U.S. FBI said Wednesday that a grenade thrown in the crowd during last week's speech by U.S. President George W. Bush was capable of exploding.

The statement by agent Bryan Paarmann contradicted initial reports by Georgian officials that the grenade was not in condition to explode and that it had been found on the ground rather than thrown.

Paarmann said the grenade fell about 100 feet from the podium where Bush was speaking and ``simply failed to function due to a light strike on the blasting cap.''

The grenade was wrapped in a dark handkercheif when it was thrown, he said.

``We consider this act to be a threat against the health and welfare of the president of the United States as well as the welfare of the mulitudes of Georgian people who turned up for this event,'' Paarmann said.

Bush spoke to tens of thousands of people in Freedom Square, a main plaza in Tbilisi, the Georgian capital, on May 10. The crowd response was overwhelmingly favorable, and Bush spoke in strong support of Georgia's efforts at democratic development following the Rose Revolution of 2003.

No arrests have been made in the case, and police have appealed to the public to offer photos and videotapes that may contain information on the perpetrator.

When you consider how easy it is to obtain nuclear materials in the former Soviet republics, and Russia itself, this shouldn't come as any huge surprise.

The same thing could happen in Canada or the United States. There is no shortage of nutcases out there.

Hmmm...I consider the grenade NOT going off to be a threat against the health and welfare of everyone else on the planet.

If this is the case, this is a failed Presidential assassination attempt (not to mention all the other people in the crowd who would have been killed.)

I'm rather amazed I haven't seen more about this in the news. Hell, given what gets the media's attention, I would have thought this would be dominating the news.

Seriously, I'm also wondering why this hasn't hit the mainstream US news yet. I got this off of the Worldwide AP service. It did just hit the wire earlier today, though (this morning).

Could it be that they don't want to screw up Georgian/Russian-U.S. relations up, and are downplaying it because of that?

The mainstream US media has so many conflicts of interest that certain stories either hit the US m.s.m. rediculously late, or simply never get covered at all.

I must admit though that this particular story does not seem like one that I would expect to be delayed in hitting the US mainstream press, but who knows what could have happened....

I'm thankful the grenade didn't go off. Aside from not liking people to be killed or maimed, thinking of Dick Cheney as Pres. makes me want to grab the Tums and beg the Canadians to take me!

Hey, we have our problems too, thank you very much.

We currently have a shipping tycoon running the country, PM Paul Martin. Or "Mr. Dithers" as the rest of the world calls him. As Finance Minister, he embroiled the country in one disgusting kickback scandal after another.

Things like the the Sponsorship Scandal, where the political lackey and head of Via Rail threatened folks with physical violence if they didn't toe the line. They called him "The Choo Choo Man." Seriously, this is straight out of The Sopranos.

The Human Resource Development Canada billion dollar "Training Fund" that was supposed to "reeducate" workers displaced by cheap Chinese imports. Turns out that billion dollars disappeared.

The National Gun Registry that was supposed to make crime a thing of the past. Ha! It was supposed to cost $2 million, the tally now is very close to $2 billion and it still doesn't work.

To avoid a non-confidence vote, Dithers recently joined forces with the NDP's Jack Layton in exchange for billions of taxpayer dollars. Or, the "same 'ole same 'ole."

We had this conversation at work today. The consensus was that the Bush administration's policies is a "house of cards" that the public simply refuses to face up to. Part of that has to do with Bush's charisma (though I never saw any charisma).

And since Cheney does not have that charisma, if Bush were replaced by Cheney, the facade would collapse. Plus, many of us are fully aware of who has really been running the USA all along anyway. Read Paul O'Neil's and Richard Clarke's books if you want to see just how obvious it was that Cheney was in charge in the first 2 years. And since that time, Bush has totally embraced Cheney's world view.

Geez how could I forget Ms. Stronach? I understand on a per-hour basis she is the most expensive one out there. I guess all of Daddy's money from Magna International is keeping her in high style though.

Anyhoo, by now you know that the Liberal budget passed by one vote - thank YOU Ms. Stronach - so it looks like we're stuck with this idiot at least until the Gomery Inquiry wraps.

I'm still hopeful the average Canadian gets really teed over the never-ending scandals and boots them.

I totally agree. The President of the US is more than just a man. He is also the symbol of America.

In another discussion at work, the point was made that planes flying over the White House should not be shot down just to protect one man, the President. I disagreed. Until Jan of 2009, GW is more than just a man.

That being said, I still think GW is the most dangerous American president since Jefferson Davis. If GW were replaced by Mr. Halliburton, those Americans who really aren't paying much attention may come to the same conclusion.
