Upcoming NAV for iPhone users... Cool stuff!

    This is just the beginning of what I think has the potential to change portable navigation forever. It's too bad Garmin is not partnering with Apple on this, but Tom Tom does a good job with portable navigation too. This is going to be huge because:

    1- Live and frequent updates... never get to the wrong location because traffic changed recently. Also, get accurate POIs (in case that starbucks has closed recently and you navigator have no idea)
    2-No need to invest in the absurd prices and update charges for factory nav systems for those who already have the iPhone...
    3-The screen resolution of the iPhone is way better than most current portable or factory NAV systems, so graphics have the potential to be outstanding and very cool!
    4-I believe real-time traffic has a lot more potential to be more accurate if broadcasted via 3G with radio backup, so they will probably invest on it.

    I’m sure there are people going… how about the small screen size of the iPhone? Well, it’s not that much smaller from my 4.3” Garmin. Also, in my experience with portable NAV vs. factory, portables like Tom Tom and Garmin do a much nicer job displaying good sizes of the most important stuff to see during navigation… even though my Garmin screen is much smaller than my factory NAV in my Odyssey, I find my Garmin much easier to follow…

    This is very cool. I use tom toms for my business and have always liked their simple user interface. I am awaiting a prius iv with solar/nav(due on the 16th!). How does the toyota interface compare with the tom tom?(i have an 07 prius w/o nav at the moment). All the images i see here and in toyota brochures show map view. I prefer the street view offered by tom tom. Can the toyota nav display street view also and are there turn by turn directions? Or do i need to buy the new app for iphone : ) . Thanks

    Tom Tom has some really cool models and I prefer them over the Garmin units. As an aside, AT&T just released an APP today that actually turns the iPhone into a NAV unit. I called AT&T and asked for a free month and they were glad to oblige. I downloaded the APP and tried it out. The only thing that isn't that good is the sound quality of the turn by turn directions. I have a feeling the Tom Tom is going to have an attachment which will allow for better sound as well as mounting to the dashboard. If you're interested, try out the AT&T APP just for the heck of it. I even have the built in NAV in my Prius but sometimes I need a NAV when I rent a car or I'm with someone who does not have navigation in their car.

    I just received an email from AT&T yesterday announcing their own turn by turn nav system for the iPhone.

    Very interesting and intriguing.

    Terrible price point...$9.99 PER MONTH subscription fee for each iPhone.

    At about $120 a year, you must be joking AT&T.

    I will wait for TomTom to provide their own nav app. It will just have to be less expensive than that.

    $120/year? Who are they kidding? I'd consider the TomTom app, but for $10/mo it's silly, I can buy a portable GPS for $100 or less, and the basic google Map tool works fine for me as a Nav unit when I have needed it. But then again, the cars that I own all have factory or retrofitted factory Navi anyways.
