Wheel nut compatibility?

    Howdy,
    I currently have a set of Wedsport wheels on my 06 Prius. I bought them used and they came with a set of wheel nuts. I am not sure what type of wheel nuts they are, but they look a lot like the Muteki wheel nuts advertised on Carson Toyota's website (Carson Toyota TRD Parts, Replacement parts and accessories for Southern California).

    When I bought those wheels, I gave away my set of OEM wheel nuts. Now I am planning to put my original OEM wheels back on the car for a while.

    I am wondering if anyone knows whether I can use the aftermarket wheel nuts on my stock OEM wheels, or do I need to buy a set of OEM wheel nuts instead. Not sure if all wheel nuts are the same (at least the side that bears against the wheel)?

    Answered my own question...

    Called my friendly neighborhood tire shop, they noted different types of seating surfaces on wheel nuts and wheels. I pulled one off the WedSport wheels, it was a "cone" type of seat. My Hondas have a "ball" type. And the OEM Prius wheels appear to have a flat seating surface. So guess I need to buy some wheel nuts.

    Make sure the thread pitch of the studs matches the nuts too....most aftermarket wheels use an acorn style nut. Rays Engineering and Work wheels make nice aftermarket wheel lug nuts.

    Yep, the Wedsport wheels use "acorn" style wheel nuts.

    I picked up some OEM Toyota wheel nuts. The friendly neighborhood parts mgr referred to them as "Shank" lug nuts... suppose because it has both a conical bit that slides into the wheel and a washer that seats on it too. I'll post up a picture later to help add to the knowledge base on this site.

    When I had my Prius, I had a set of studded snow tires on multi-fit steel wheels. The OEM Toyota nuts would dangerously loosen up on those wheels, which required an acorn-style nut

    So I went to NAPA and got 20 of the proper acorn style nuts in proper metric thread. This is a fairly common size, they had the nuts in stock. Cost me around $16 and the nuts stayed at proper torque the entire winter
