Re: Discounted Toyota Prius Extended Warranty /Service Contr

Oh, it seems too late to me...
I have purchased '05 Prius on 12/31/04 and paid $1,800 for 7-yr/100,000-mile Extended Warranty/Service Contracts. My odometer is reading 6,577 mile! I have changed motor oil and filter at 3,000 and 6,000 by myself. Is there a way that I can get most of extra paid money back by canceling the current dealer signed contract and taking a new 7/100k contract for $985? I appreciate if Danny or anyone can help.
    Thanks,
    Jack

As I understand it, you can get a prorated refund on your present policy, since it is less than three years or 36,000 miles. I think there are examples of how the prorate is calculated, shown in the first post in this thread. There may be an additional $25 charge for processing. If the refund is more than $985 (and I think it would be) you would be money ahead to get the refund and buy the new policy.

That may be true for where you are located. In California and several other states this type of a contract is subject to sales tax.

I live in Glendale California.I bought a Prius 5 weeks ago. There was no sales tax on the extended warranty.I was also given a certificate from the dealership that all of my extended warranty money(not prorated)would be refunded at the end of the extended warranty period if no claims were made during the extended warranty period. This is a Toyota platinum warranty 6yrs/100,000.

If the price of the contract was included in the Motor Vehicle Purchase Order, which is the purchase contract, I suggest that you carefully review all the figures and calculations on the form.

I did look at my contract before I answered your question.Line D sales tax (on items in A+B+C).Line F is optional service contract. There is no line on the purchase order that allows for tax on a warranty. Please tell me on what line of your Prius purchase order do you find sales tax added to the warranty

OK, I'm really confused about how the Pre-Paid Maintenance Plan works. I just called the Toyota service dept near me for maintenance cost estimates:
    5K, 10K, 20K, 25K, 35K, 40K, 50K, 55K - $51 for oil change & tire rotation
    15K, 45K - $265
    30K - $425

    Total - $1,363

If I purchase the 4yr/55K miles Premium plan ($670), does that mean I will have no out-of-pocket expense for all maintenance work through 55K miles, or will the plan only pay for a portion of the maintenance cost??? If it only pays for a portion, how do I find out what those coupons will pay for?

    Thanks!

I bought my Toyota Extra Care service plan from Troy through this site. This way, some of my purchase money was used to support this bulletin board.

so, smart me. i paid top dollar for an extended warranty from the dealer when i bought my prius. would i be smart and cancel, and get the prorated amount back, and buy the warranty mentioned here? i assume the 7/100,000 is calculated from new date, and total mileage on the vehicle?

Yes, you would save a bundle if you paid as much as I did ($700 over SRP) and haven't driven your car 36,000 miles yet.

No. Regardless of when you purchase the extended warranty or how many miles you had on the car at that time, the seven years and 100,000 miles are calculated from the date on which the car was originally sold and placed in service.

Does the EV switch provided by Coastal Tech void the extended warranty?

    Thanks,

    Re: Service Contracts

The Premium AutoCare pre-paid maintenance plan only covers what is listed in your Scheduled Maintenance Guide under the normal operating conditions section. Many, if not most dealers include "Dealer" recommended services which would not be covered by the plan. Basically Toyota is only going to cover what they recommend, not what the dealers decide to add to that. I should also note, that in almost all of the services, the AutoCare plan pays to have many different things checked/inspected....but all it covers is the checking/inspecting, if the dealer determines that a given item needs replacing, that would be at your expense.

    Thank you, Troy!

Now I'm down to one more question:

If I have the extended warranty (7yrs/100K miles) AND AutoCare (4yrs/55K miles Premium plan), then I should not have any out-of-pocket expense for any items that the dealers may determine need replacing through 4yrs/55K miles, as long as those items are covered under original/extended warranty. Is this correct?

    Thanks!

Yes, but you still could run into things that aren't covered, like tires, light bulbs, brake pads, wiper blades, etc...

I just don't want to give anyone the impression that even by getting both plans that it will cover EVERYTHING, because it doesn't. There is still the possibility of some out of pocket expenses. Although it certainly does limit them.

Troy, can you please answer my question (above).

Here is the link to their site (the EV product specifically).

    Hi Tim,

Aftermarket accessories won't totally void the warranty, however if a covered component fails and its determined that the aftermarket part is the root cause of the failure it would void the coverage of that part.

    Warning: Rant:

I am having a problem. My dealer-finance guy in Seattle charged me $2200 for the 6yr/100K Platinum. I called Troy a while ago and asked about this deal. I then called my dealer and had him start the 30-day cancellation process. I later went in for another reason and asked him about the warranty stuff. He said that as long as it was the same warranty (Which Troy told me, and I believe him), he didn't see a problem with it. I went in an hour ago to see if it was actually cancelled, so I can hurry up and pay Troy. (It's been at least 30 days). My dealer wasn't there, so I talked to the other finance person. (My dealer-finance guy is the director of the business unit at my dealership, By The Way). She said that they don't honor Troy's warranty, since he is a third party. I would have to pay all parts, labor, etc., and get Troy to reimburse. She also claimed that he wouldn't reimburse me everything since each shop's labor charge can be different, and she claimed Troy wouldn't cover the deductible, and some of the other "extras" that my dealership provides - roadside assistance, etc.

I explained the whole thing, that he is also a dealer, and that it's the same warranty. She explained that he was a third party and no dealership will accept it. She then went on to mention that she can take her 4Runner to any dealership and they will honor her "True" Toyota Warranty, because it is a manufacturer's warranty. This doesn't fit with the "We don't accept any other dealership's warranty" stance.

Anyway, I'm a little miffed, so I thought I'd read up on it a bit more. She also claimed that she only makes $100 on the warranty, while the other guy said he didn't make anything. He also didn't say anything about not honoring this warranty. I now have the link to the financial site that says what the "SRP" is, which doesn't match either of their claims. (see http://www.toyotafinancial.com/pyv/extende...cing_prius.html )

An attempt to call Troy failed after 10-12 rings - no voicemail?

Troy - are you allowed to contact my dealer and clear this up? ar they even partly right?

If I didn't love this car so much, I'd be tempted to return it and buy it from another Area dealership. (and the cost would defeat the whole purpose of trying to get a cheaper warranty)

    End Rant

    engunneer,

I don't know how to break it to you, but you are extremely gullible. Your dealer is very reluctant to give up the $1,400 profit he made selling you the policy.

I bought my extended warranty from Troy and the policy was issued by Toyota Extra Care, P.O. Box 9550, Cedar Rapids, IA 52409-9550. 800-228-8559.

Now that this is squared away, let me remind you that by bringing Troy's name into the negotiations with your dealer, you are playing a spoiler for any one else who would be a buyer of this plan from Troy through this site.

    This is what Troy wrote:

If enough dealers cry foul, Troy may lose his ability to offer this deal.

ENOUGH SAID!!! (yes, I am shouting, now)
