Thanks for the tips. This exact problem just happened to me today! I was driving on a road past some construction, and one block later, while accelerating up a hill, I heard this awful, horrible, loud, metal-on-metal screeching noise.

Called AAA, they popped off a tire, and handed me a tiny, pea-sized piece of gravel. No more screeching.

 

These posts helped us. Thxs. We have had our Prius only 4 days and heard a rotational grinding noise from the left front wheel. I pulled the tire and sure enough a piece of gravel was riding on the disc rotor wedged against the brake pad, plucked it out and all is fine.

If you think this is happening to you, look on the rotor and you can see scaring on the rotor w/o even removing the wheel.

We live on a gravel drive and find it interesting that we never experienced this problem before w/ any other Toyota models or other brands...could this be a design issue?

Fiona let out what certainly sounded like a death scream in Eau Claire last week when I was in a gravel parking lot. It was really scary sounding, but I remembered reading about this so I hit a couple bumps & hit the brakes hard once or twice & the noise stopped. So I don't have proof that it was a little pebble stuck in the brake but it certainly sounds like that's what happened. This was about 10 days ago & I haven't heard the sound since. (I would have called AAA if it didn't stop right away, but what a scary, horrible noise it was - sounded like the whole bottom half of the car was scraping on the ground!)

Just happened to me today. Sounded HORRIBLE, I was really scared a bearing fell off or something worse happened. I looked it up here and after waiting a bit for it to cool. I walked up to my car and wiggled my calipers around a bit. Didn't feel anything fall out, but definitely problem went away, and I went on my merry way for a great night of dancing and good times. Thanks everyone!

 

Happened to me one windy day... was going slowly out of the parking lot when I heard a grinding noise on the front left. Turned out it was a twig with some leaves scratching against the disc. scared the hell out of me at first.
