My god Bev, you made the thread so boring by posting sport results that not many others can compete. You have out boring-ed the lot!

I'm still waiting to hear about my travel arrangements for the Prius Pre-View in Sydney.

I know it's boring isn't it. It's OK though, because I get a whole thread to myself.

Not giving you much notice are they?

We went to our community's 4th of July celebration yesterday... and returned last night to watch the fireworks.
They play music during the fireworks. All patriotic songs. Okay, I can understand playing the theme songs of the four branches of the military (which I noticed, in particular, is heavy on war themes), then America the Beautiful... okay, that's fine. Then it was a couple of different renditions of God Bless America... then it went into a couple of new country songs that were all about how patriotic rednecks are, and how willing they are to go blow up anybody else in the world that dared to disrespect America.
At this point, I'm about ready to throw up. I'm also ready to look seriously at moving to another country.

Your welcome to Oz Rae, you can be patriotic to any country you choose here. Not saying we are not patriotic to Australia, we are, but it is not so much in your face. My parents migrated from England before I was born, and I am thankful that they did. I love the country I was lucky enough to be born in.

I agree Bev, come over here Rene' we can always use another happy couple.
Bev is right, most Aussies will fight for the country but we also respect your right to feel passionate for where your roots are. Most of us don't know the words to the national anthem and it's even too much trouble for some to stand and be quiet when it's played, but we are all proud of where we live and what Australia has become.

To understand this it is important to realise Australia was not born from a war and there was never a civil war or successful invasion. But we are proud of our achievements in other people's wars. Australian soldiers are legendary for their guts and determination in the face of unbeatable odds, and winning.

You would of course have to forgive that we laugh at the American form of patriotism although parts of it are seeping in here. Our lives don't pivot around the military and we feel free enough that we don't feel need to give thanks to the military for keeping us safe from outsiders every day. ANZAC Day is the big day, and Remembrance Day. So you just keep the 25th of April clear to watch an early morning service, watch a march and play 2 up with the diggers at the local RSL and stop for a minute on 11 November and that's it, get on with your life. The most prominent war song you hear is [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Urtiyp-G6jY"]"Only 19" by Redgum.[/ame]

We only just beat Fremantle!!!!!!!!!! Adelaide Crows 19 goals 16 points to Fremantles 1 goal 7 points. So that is 7 wins in a row. It wasn't the most thrilling game of football I have seen, but a win is a win. :D

"Just feel truly fortunate that Australia has never been attacked inside her own borders by another country, perhaps that can help explain, to you, our high regard of military steadfastness and diligence".

We have so been attacked!!!!! The Japanese entered our waters and landed in Australia during World War II. They were captured and held in POW camps.

I apologize for my "misquote", Bev, I should have checked my history before I spoke........
More information and more history is always welcome.

I was on jury duty last week and, to my surprise, was selected as a juror for a trial.

The trial started last Wednesday and should end next Friday or shortly thereafter.

I like it ... it's "money for nothing, chicks for free."

Actually, it's more like "very little money, and no chicks," but that's close enough.

I am not a war history buff, my Son is, but I know the Japanese tried to enter through Darwin, Northern Territory, bit silly really when you consider the terrain and journy they would have had to make to get to any really populated areas. They also arrived in waters near Sydney, arriving as close as Sydney Harbour, I believe, but were captured. The Japanese had plans of taking over Australia, and USA, and other parts of the world, as you know. It is a part of War History I would need to do more research on. :)
