O.K. so after considering all of your advise, I went by a Cingular store (just around the corner from my house, didn't even know it was there). I can get either the Nokia 6230 for $150 after rebates or the Motorola V551 for $100 after rebates. This is with a two year commitment on a $40/month plan that includes 450 anytime minutes, 5000 night and weekend minutes and unlimited nationwide calling to Cingular customers. I don't really use the phone that much so I don't need many minutes.

    1) Is this a reasonable plan?

    2) Which of these phones would be better suited for integrating with the Prius?

    3) What are the differences between these phones?

Once again I place my sanity in your collective all knowing hands!

    Dan

    *cough* Motorolla V551 *cough* :)

it works very well. you can transfer call to the car and have them transfered back to the phone. Single address book entry sending at a time, but not 1 phone does all of the address book at once ( that i know of ) You can have it automatically pick up. You can make it so it ask to connect when in range of the prius. This way you can choose to use bluetooth (people in the car maybe?)

That's the same plan i have. I like it.

the V551 has a lot of features. I can't say it's better than nokia because i know nothing about nokias. I really like the V551 though.

Let me repeat because we are on a different page now and I really want to know. Does anyone have any experience buying the same plan described above, the Cingular $40 with a v551, from Amazon?

MY $40 Cingular plan was with the Nokia 6230. You wait a few days for Cingular to OK the deal, then Amazon ships you the phone. Amazon emailed me the number when Cingular told them it was activated.

About $50 per month total including all the taxes and fees. $36 for activation.

Reception in my house is about the same as with Verizon, just like at work. No downside yet...

[font=Comic Sans MS:fabb36b56a]I got a V551 for free (after rebates) with Cingular through LetsTalk.com. I think they may be affiliated with Toyota somehow.[/font:fabb36b56a]

The $150 Amazon rebate apparently includes conditions not seen on the rebate form. Websites report Amazon denying rebates due to porting another phone number over to the newly-created Cingular account. I did that after 2 days of service, and am seriously annoyed.

I have verified that the account was not closed and reopened to accomplish the port (like Amazon claimed), and that Amazon is still the Agent of record on the account (probably to get their >$150 finder's fee.) I'm adding all this info to the rebate form, along with the number I was originally assigned, and will send it in with my 2nd bill as planned. If they invent another way to deny the rebate, I'll have that stuff ready to forward to the FTC.

I really wish companies would tell people up front what issues they have. It would have been annoying but doable to hold on to the Verizon account for 2 months THEN port the number over, but I never saw any reason to do so, and still can't find anything on Amazon's site about porting...

An earlier post suggests letstalk.com and the myrates site referred to us by michael180 is also from letstalk. Good stuff has been written about this service. I talked with someone from the President's office at Cingular today and discussed the v551 and other phones as well as the best way to sign up for plans. It appears that the stores will normally be the most expensive way. I would like to hear from anyone who has used letstalk.com as at this point this is my source of choice.
