Don't think the height of the roof has much to do MPG. It could affect handling as it would raise the center of gravity.

I was informed from the dealer that the solar package adds an extra 400 lbs. to the car---I am sure this has to impact gas mileage, and that is one of the main reasons I am buying the car!!!

The only impact there is your dealer's impact to the gene pool.

are you even reading the responses? are you a troll?

you spread this question across three different threads last night about 6pm and had three answers (all saying its about 60 lbs, not 400, etc). I answered two myself at 7:25pm.

So in the same thread, one post after mine, you say it again, at 10:28pm?

    please read the threads.

i am having a bad week so i may be overreacting, but please......

Does anyone know why they don't use the roof to top off the battery? This would seem like an obvious thing to do with the solar panel; especially, when not using it to fan the car??

I have a IV with SP. I drive varying distances all the time and almost always have the sun roof open. My mileage for the first 1400 miles onthe car is 54.8. The mileage is very bad during the first 5 minutes of driving and then picks up so the longer the drive the better the mileage. This driving is city highway and rush hour in chicago. The best trip I have had so far was 62 miles per hour in rush hour stop and go traffic.

My wife talked me into the sunroof saying I would love it. She was right.

No you're not overreacting. This person did post the same comment multiple times and I noticed the same post 3 hours after you had posted an answer.

    Has anyone tried this:
Going down a stretch of road (maybe on the way to work) hit cruise control and record your mpg for a starting and stopping point. The next day do the exact same thing with the sunroof open. What is the difference in MPG?

even with identical driving conditions, mileage can vary due to the SOC. a mile is not enough distance to matter. depending on the speed, having the panel open can probably affect the mileage by a few tenths of a mpg

I just came across this custom sunroof video on YouTue and thought it looks pretty nice.
    It says 2009, but it's clearly a 2010.

I like the look of the factory solar roof better. Maybe because I'm getting one (thanks, Dianne!). :-D

I put on 1,000 miles with a package IV solar and averaged 53.9 MPG with a 35 mile commute each way.

Sure, me too... and because that one doesn't come with the solar ventilation. I just thought the vid was pretty cool to see.

Re: Solar roof and mpg - what's the real story?

Okay, I've been hearing from other Priuschatters that the solar roof adds around 60 1bs. I am assuming that includes the solar panel and the sunroof. And that the 60 lbs is in addition to what the standard metal roof would weigh.

Now, we all heard the guy that said his salesman told him the roof weighs 400 1bs and that was refuted by a bunch of you. Well, the other day, one salesman (who had been recommended by a fellow Priuschatter) said that the solar panels add about 60 1bs but on top of that the glass sunroof weigh another 100 or so 1bs, so we are talking around 200 lbs.

Today, the salesman I was referred to through the Costco Auto Buying program said the solar roof weighs about 300 lbs and so has some impact on the fuel efficiency, which is why Toyota makes so few of them. When I questioned this assertion, he said that he got this information straight from the horse's mouth from the Toyota rep himself. (I didn't place an order with this dealer even though I would have gotten a Costco discount because he said it would take six months to get a solar and that my $500 deposit is non-refundable.)

So what's the real story?? I've heard so many things said about the weight of the solar roof and why Toyota has so few that I don't know what to believe. Where did the 60-lb figure come from? Is this from Toyota? Why are salesmen being told it weighs 200 - 400 pounds? What is the weight of a standard roof?
