My 2002 Prius has all warning lights on. It is at the deaLership x 3 days now. I have no loaner,no extended warranty and the car has over 99,0000 miles.
Am I at the mercy of the dealership and what is the ball park repair price gonna be? Any guesses? Appreciate any and all responses. Thanks.

    Santo,

You should post your question either as a new thread, or as a question in an existing on-topic thread (if any), in the Gen I sub-forum. You'll be much more likely to get responses and discussion regarding your issues that way.

    Good luck.

Just ordered my IV-SR on Saturday. We have not encountered the "accountant" yet re: Extended Warranty / Pre-Paid Service. My question is, if i request a quote from WarrantyShack, how many calls / emails will I receive?

Are they going to sell my information to third parties and increase the number of telemarketers that continue to call even though I am on the "Do Not Call" list and have an unlisted number?

I just want to make sure that everything is on the "up and up" before I pay for something that sounds too good to be true.

    Thanks!

I contacted Troy directly by email. The only response I got was an quote and answers to my questions. As far as I can tell, he did not add my name to any mailing list. His approach was here are my prices and let me know if you have questions. No sales pressure. No pesty emails.

I emailed Troy at his place of business at the Toyota dealer and also left voice mail. He emailed me back, told me the prices and the procedure, said to let him know if i wanted to get the warranty. I emailed with info they need about the car, made the payment, the warranty came in the mail. I haven't gotten any calls from any telemarketers. I'm on the do not call list too, have been for a long time, just renewed it yesterday because i heard it needs to be renewed periodically. A few do get through unfortunately. I don't expect any calls from Toyota of Greenfield.

The quote requests only go to one person, and we have an agreement in place that he will not use your information for any purposes other than the warranty sale.

Even if you contact Troy directly, please be sure to let him know you found out about him through PriusChat so that you get the best rate and PriusChat gets credit for the sale.

I not sure the standard warranty from Toyota can be purchased for Prius's older than 3 years and 36000 miles. I just recently bought a 2008 Prius with 34000 miles and just email about the cost for the various years. The dealership wanted more than what has been quoted here so I will will come back in terms of costs.

    Troy's reply --

"Unfortunately, the other poster is correct. You're only eligible for the Toyota Extra Care plans while you're within the original 3 yr / 36,000 mile factory warranty. That's how Toyota protects themselves from issuing a policy on a car with existing problems. Otherwise there would be nothing to stop someone from contacting me for a warranty on a vehicle with a bad engine or something (Nav unit, A/C, or whatever)."

he also recommended warrantydirect.com; I checked on them - good company but very pricey.

Okay, I am about to pick up my 2010 Prius (having been in an accident and ruined my 2005 Prius).. I had an extended warranty on the old Prius that was at 50K and I have heard that I can get money back. Now I want to understand about waiting to buy the extended warranty. The dealer says they give it to me at cost for $1700 but it looks like I can do much better other places. $1050 or better.... and I can wait until I have the car and as long as it hasn't reached 36K I can "shop around". Is that right?

You have until 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, to get the Toyota extended warranties.

Personally, I'm an advocate of waiting until 35 months or 35,000 miles, whichever occurs first, to decide whether to get a Toyota extended warranty. That way you'll be much better informed as to (1) whether you think that getting an extended warranty is a good insurance buy for your particular car, and (2) which extended warranty (if any) to get in terms of maximum years and/or miles, because you can save hundreds more off that current $1055 price if you choose a plan with fewer maximum years and/or miles to fit your past and anticipated future use of the car.

Sorry, but no. Toyota is very strict on this. You're only eligible while the vehicle is still within the original factory 3 yr / 36K warranty. Toyota will reject the warranty application even if you're only one day past the 36 month mark.

This is how Toyota protects themselves from issuing a policy on a vehicle that could potentially have pre-existing problems. By only offering it while it's within the "bumper-to-bumper" factory warranty, there cannot be an existing problem that isn't already covered by the factory warranty. This is also why you don't need to have the car inspected prior to purchasing a plan.

    _______________
    Danny,
I think you are the exact person I wrote to previously to get my 2004 Prius, CA License 5KDF195, a Platinum Toyota factory warranty, but I have another question. My Prius now has 85K miles on it, and runs perfectly, but what I really want to do is keep it (yep, I've got the CA carpool lane stickers) until Toyota comes out with the 2011 with upgraded battery and higher mileage.
Does Toyota factory offer a warranty that will extend the one I have about a year or so until the next generation comes out?
Please let me know. My email address is: [email protected]

The 2010 looks quite similar to my 2004 and I don't feel the increase in mileage is significant enough to look at a 2010....so please let me know about covering mine until the 2011 is released, probably about in a year.

    Thank you for your time.

Okay, everyone. Here's the deal. I bought my 2009 Prius on July 3 and got the Toyota national special offer of 0% financing for 4 years. Didn't know about this forum and the great prices for the 100,000 mile warranty and for the prepaid maintenance. Dealer talked me into both at the full price plus $400 gap coverage and rolled it all into the 0% loan.

Seemed a great deal to me!

Today I got the warranty in the mail from Toyota, still nothing on the prepaid maintenance, but it says I have the right to cancel the warranty within 30 days of the date they mailed the warranty to me for a $25.00 processing fee.

My question is would you cancel the warranty now and buy it later at the forum price? Do you think I could do that since it was folded into the loan? Not that anyone should know that, but maybe someone else has done it.

Any ideas? Do I also have the right to cancel the prepaid maintenance?

One more question. My car was a demo used by the dealer's wife and had just over 5000 miles on it. I noticed the maintenance record doesn't show the 5000 mile service that should have been done. Should I insist they either do this service or show evidence that it was done? (I'm assuming it was done.)

Wish I'd found this forum before I bought the car!

    Thanks.

    Kris

    fundamental question

Total newbie to this site here.

I just picked up my new 2008 Prius with about 23k on it. I got heavy pressure--a real hard sell--to buy the 7/100 extended warranty, and after negotiating on price I went for it. A key reason is the provision of a full refund if we don't make any claims.

My fundamental question is this: what is your experience? Have you had any of the scary, expensive repairs that the dealer tries to warn you about?
If you bought the warranty, has it paid for itself?
Has anyone tried to collect on the refund provision?

    TIA
    Jack

    Re: fundamental question

Toyota does NOT offer a money back guarantee with their plans. Any dealer offering that option, are either selling a 3rd party warranty or their packaging a separate insurance policy together with the Toyota warranty. I'd suggest reading the fine print of the refund guarantee carefully since it's not backed or offered by Toyota.

Hopefully some of the members here can share their stories of having used the warranty. I know it definitely does get used....a few weeks ago I even had a call from someone just calling to thank me following a $6000+ claim on his Platinum warranty for his Prius.

You're right. I'm looking at the paperwork right now and it says that Premier Dealer Services in San Diego is the administrator for the refund agreement. Do you know anything about them?
