Seems as many of the questions on the forums are related to the newer - and I must say not nearly-as-attractive - model of the Prius. Is there a section reserved for those of us who've been owners since the beginning?

    Not that I know of.

There are many differences but also many similarities between the two. Also, there are many 04/05 owners who had own or are still drving the 01~03. So, if you have any questions, just shoot.

Pretty much all of the questions are all mingled together, and while most topics have to do with the 04+ model, if you include "Classic" in your topic title everyone will know what model type you're talking about.

We might look into doing some subforums for the Classic/04+ in the future.

OK - good idea. I get confused reading some of them because they don't apply to the Classic model.

I have 70,000 miles on a Classic Prius I've been driving since I bought it new in April 2001.

Gas mileage seems to have held steady, in fact I think my fuel economy has improved as I've learned to drive with a "hybrid mentality."

I am diappointed with the rapid wear on tires. I'm on my third set of them - including the original set which Toyota replaced when they wore out at 10K. The tire shop manager tells me this is not unusual for a car with such small diameter wheels.

There is one performance issue that has occured. About 5-10 minutes after I begin driving, after having sat the car overnight or for a long period of time, the engine seems to momentarily lose power for a split second. This is barely noticeable to anyone but me and the car doesn't even really slow down - it just feels as if the gas engine cuts off for the slightest amount of time.

It happens just once. I can recall one time when this occured a second time during a driving period, but it was on a very long trip and the instances werea bout five hours apart.

I've had my Toyota service dealer run a computer check and they can't find anything. I've tried to watch the computer display to see what it's doing but it happens so fast I don't think the display has time to post.

This happens EVERY day, and it doesn't seem to be influenced by speed, temperature or any other variable driving comdition.

Other than this - the car is perofmring every bit as well as it did when I drove it off the lot.

I noticed the wifes 2k1 did the same thing, I called it the "sags" never quit just sagged in power a bit. Just noticeable and like you said only once per trip. My 2k3 has not done it at anytime in the year and a half that I've owned it, so that makes me think that it was a computer code problem. At 70,000 miles your just getting a Classic broken in. Call again when you go thru 250,000 and update us.

A quick question on the tire problem, are you still using the Bridgestone Potenza tires? or have you switched to Dunlop SP10's? The Bridgestones sucked with really poor life. The Dunlops are a lot better in terms of life span, still not comparable to a conventional tire, but 2 1/2's better than the Bridgestones.

Thanks OldManJimbo and Frank - These kinds of experiences are so valuable - helps us to make an informed decision
I'm test driving a new Prius on Saturday - but I have to say I'm already sold on the car - its just the finances now (UK prices are US 30k minimum !)

there is a taxi here in Vancouver BC Canada that last I heard/talked to Andrew had about 240,000 km on it and his Classic cab (2k1) went back to Toyota with 320,000Km on it. No major problems on the Classic, just nomal wear and tear items. I should call him and see what the Km's are on the 2k4 Cab. Just called and it's currently at 256,369Km with no major problems. Hope this is a help in your decision.
