toyota mandates dealers not hold prius's on lot for "cash for clunkers"

i just talked to my sales person about coming and picking my new 2010 prius on the 24th and he said that toyota doesn't want their dealers holding prius's on the lot waiting till the 24th. :(he said that the east coast is going to be able to start it hours before the west coast and by then the federal funds could be gone.

has anyone else been told that yet? or is that really true?

people need to know about this!

If that were true I'm not sure why Toyota would have a "huge" CARS program advertisement on their main page:
Toyota Cars, Trucks, SUVs & Accessories

i think by having the advertisment up they got people into showrooms. that to me seems like a good marketing ploy.

I know some have already started doing it, but I don't know any of the details. I didn't make it that far. If that's true, I hope it doesn't bite the dealers or the customers in the butt. Of course, that's the risk people took by participating before the formal rollout of the program.
I still find that hard to believe. There's supposed to be a method of determining how much money is still available once the program is formally rolled out.

    Sales people = liars.

It's like real estate, they make their money by screwing you so you have to be very careful with ANYTHING which they say.

Oh, and I don't mean that specifically about Car Salesmen, I mean that about ANYONE who is trying to sell you something. They aren't being nice, they are trying to get you to buy something. While there are different degrees of doucheyness that each individual will go to, at their core it is all about getting the sale, NOT about you being happy.

ok i just talked to another toyota dealer in the area and he said that toyota just can't hold prius's or they won't allocate them anymore for next month. but that dealer won't hold any prius's until the program goes into affect. also they won't do a dealer transfer either, and it makes sense. prius's are selling very well right now.

here in my state you don't have to pay tax on the prius's per toyota. and getting $4500 plus the $1700 we would save on tax is a big chunk of money.

i'm not sure what to do now.

on one hand my dealer has held my prius for me and i can go get it now and only save the $1700 of tax. and use our 2000 jeep cherokee for whatever we can get for it on trade.

or we can wait until next week and try to buy whatever they have left and we may not get the color and package we want. but we save $4500 and $1700. but thats all depending on wheather or not they even have prius's at all by then.

So those that have always had fuel efficient cars are now being punished and cannot get a Prius allocated because of the Cars program?

We've been asked, as dealers, to not start writing CARS contracts yet. Not till the4 program starts.l That's true. And, what I read from another poster is that the deaers won't hold cars. I can understand that. Toyota's a "turn and earn" thing so if we turn away buyers for a whole week, we damage our travel rate and in turn, cost ourselves cars as dealers and as a region.

They ship cars every two weeks or so. So, "take what's left...? meaning, you can't wait an extra week for a better selection?

Wow, some salespeople just don't get it. Or hear whatever they want to hear. Dianne is 100% correct. Traditionally we won't hold cars that are selling well right now. Will we hold a 2010 Camry LE? Oh god yes. I have 10 others in the same color. Will I hold a Prius? Yes, but I am going to report it as sold the day you leave a deposit. So your warranty starts ticking off regardless of whether you hold the car or I do. If you don't like that, then I will not hold the car for you. BUT, I disclose this fact upfront and do not hide it.

So, with that said, I am putting every C4C deal in pencil for now. If the terms change and I don't like the way it will work for dealers, I will refund your deposit. If you don't like the way to deal will work, I will refund your deposit. Basically, we are treating these deals as temporary only.

And we wrote 7 deals just today that involve the C4C money. That makes over 25 that we have waiting for the 24th. Total cash involved? $106,500. That is why if the government throws us a very large curve ball on friday, we will back out each and every deal and start fresh.

Gosh Jeff, why doncha tell us how ya really feel? LOL!!

In lovely laid back Southern CA, land of the hybrids and celebratory oasis of pretty cars, we don't have too many clunkers in my neck of da woods. Luckily, we have more than enough cars to go around. But, that said, we just take a $500 deposit as usual to hold cars incoming. Cars on ground that are for sale, well, they are for sale.

If you wanna wait to turn in a clunk car, you are either going to have to have a planner for a salesperson (such as myself, timing the 'right' allocated cars to drop around the start of the program) or, a very open mind as to color / package ... but that said, what's the hurry? That billion bucks will last a little while. In my estimate, enough time for another allocation of cars at least! :D I'll always have enough cars to go 'round...

Besides, I hate to try and sugar coat things... I leave that for the Oreo's :p

There is funding in the program for about 250,000 cars.

    I would suggest being patient.

It really depends on where you are and what inventory your locals have. The stomping mad rush for cars will be good to see BUT hey, keep calm. While there is a bit of a stampede expected, there are lots of other models folks will also go for like Yaris & Corolla & hybrid Camry! This is not just for Prius buyers.

    CHILL! :)

Anxiety? Back in the day when I had a fiance' we had a way of getting rid of it. I'm pretty sure it still works.

At least until you get married.
