Our 2007 pkg 5 Prius is nearing 40K miles and I am wondering, what problems start cropping up in these cars as they age? Weak points? Cosmetic deterioration? Wear and tear items? Anything?

She has been trouble-free so far, with the exception of the HID headlights which were replaced under warranty. Cosmetically holding up nicely too, despite living outside and the occasional bumper blemish and air dam scrape.

Nothing I can think of.... unless you are on your factory original oil... ;)

Maybe your wiper blades? Your carpets might need a good vacuuming... Maybe your car seats would need a bit of fabreeze... The air freshener could use a change...

Seriously the next big thing is your transaxle fluid at 65k-75k... The dealership will recommend you lube a bunch of things like the throttle body. Do it only if you think you are getting degradation of performance. Track your fuel efficiency like a hawk and you will notice if something is off...

My non hybrid battery went out 45k. Considering the Smog, brakes, battery, tires and re-calls I had in a bit over a year with my old Sport Trac, I 'd say the Prius is quite low maintenance.

I put 71K miles on my 06 Gen II; great car. Other than normal oil/filter, tires and wipers, here's what I had to do:

    1. 50K miles - cleaned and adjusted rear brakes

    That's it; good luck.

    you should:

    change the oil
change the cabin air filter (the one behind the glove box)
    rotate the tires
drive it like you stole it!!!

Actually the first thing to go wrong will be that you will get bored with the car and want a 2010. ;)

My coworker drives a Toyota Corolla '94 model (odo 120K miles) , except the specific maintanance and some body repairs (at one moment rear ended a Opel Corsa) the car works fine , the rough roads weare prematurely the links , but is holding well for a 1994 Made in Japan Corolla , so i think that a good maintaned Prius is holding well .

When the HV battery is starting to run low ? , for the 2004-2005 model ?

Good idea to check the 12v and replace at the first sign of problems.
My strut went bad at about 60k.
If you don't have new tires yet chances are that the OEM Integrity tires are bad.

Other than that there's nothing to worry about...routine maintenance stuff just like any conventional car.

Our 2005 has 55k on it, and the only thing that has "gone wrong" is that we replaced the tires. Also, a bulb in the left taillight went out, which cost about $2 and 30 seconds of my time to repair.

At 50k km's, I had a full inspection done, at dealers berest. Wasted 90$ in my opinion.

Wipers & oil, wipers & oil.

Since I do less than 20k KM's per year, I figure that maybe by 2020, I might have to replace the shocks. Maybe.

At 131k, my front struts are beginning to creak when I descend speed bumps. No change in performance, just a little noise, so that might get replaced around 150k. Only "problem" was a faulty headlight leveling sensor that was replaced at 99k. 40k should be no problem at all.

I like to use the metric system to full advantage, so I would write 50 k km as 50 Mm. It's a crusade I'm on. :)

You're on your own there bud.

At 40,000 miles you might want to make sure your tyres have enough air in them. Sometimes the air can wear thin and should be changed, ask your tyre dealer to perform a tyre air viscosity check.:D

Our's will hit 40k miles before the end of the year. Wipers, oil, kick the tires, maybe even a wash.

What about the blinker fluid? :noidea:

Hmmm.... I have an '04 and will be approaching the 70k mile mark in about one month. Nothing major at all and the car has held up better than any other vehicle I've owned. If you have 40k she is just a baby!!! Probably hasn't even had her first tooth grow in!!!!!

Don't be silly the Prius uses synthetic blinker fluid, you only have to change it every 800,000 blinks... Of course if you tend to drive down the road with the blinkers on the whole way, then yeah, 800,000 blinks won't get you as far... :D

If the air does need changing ensure all the old air is removed from the tyres. A good tyre service shop will use a vacuum pump to evacuate the tyres before filling with high grade synthetic air. Be aware that synthetic air does not mix well with non synthetic air. Combining the two could result in a feeling like a flat spot on the tyre as the pressure in the synthetic air and non synthetic are may be different.

I know you're just joking. But when I got my new tires at costco they filled it with nitrogen (air that's not really synthetic, but not natural either). But no matter how much I ask them they wouldn't fill them to 40psi front and 38 rear. They said the tire pressure should be at 35 and that's what they are filling it to... I'm not sure the nitrogen really does that much... I'm probably going to fill it up to 40 with just air..

Anyways, after 40k miles I would definitely change the tunes in the CD player... :D
