    Good Afternoon,

I am new here. My name is Marc Levesque and I own a 2008 Toyota Prius, which I love dearly. I am also a avid watch collector and I have noticed that ever since I got the Prius, some of my mechanical watches have been loosing a considerable amount of time / day.

Now I have read-up on EMF and the Toyota Prius. Quite the controversial subject. I do not seem to have any ill effects from the magnetic fields, but like I said, 3 of my mechanical watches have been loosing time and seem to be demagnatized.

Is it possible, in your opinion(s), that the car has somehow demagnatized my watches?

I am terribly sorry if this subject has been brought up before. I tried doing a quick search on EMF on this forum, but could not some up with anything remotely similar to my problem. Also, a dear friend of mine told me that Russell, who is also a watch collector and an old friend, may be on these forums and may be able to help.

Thank you in advance, I look forward to hearing your thoughts...

    Marc Levesqye

If a mechanical watch is under such a heavy Gauss field as to disrupt its funciton, the same field will also disrupte *your* function.

There is nothing in a Prius that emits such a heavy Gauss field, you would need to find a specialized military or industrial research lab

    Hi Time...,

Last time I was reading how to make escapements, the idea was to keep them demagnetized.

Measurements on the Prius have showed it has less cockpit magnetic fields than many cars with open framed air-handling blower motors...

Consider that the voltage and current draw from the Prius' traction battery (I believe is 220v and amps ranging from 0 to max 80) is similar to that associated with 220 volt major appliances (commercial washing machines, tankless water heaters, welders, pottery kilns). No-one worries about standing next to those.

And, as mentioned, you want your mechnical watches to be "de"magnetized . . .

Any magnetic field that is strong enough to affect your watches would most likely be strong enough to erase your credit cards, I would assume.

The controversy is by uninformed people trying to prove a non-valid point. There are NO large or unusual magnetic or EMF fields generated by a Prius! Period. The measurements I have seen posted were the earth's magnetic field.

The Prius is designed to be efficient. Leaking magnetic fields or EMF would be a loss of energy. That was not allowed in the design. Even the battery cable from the rear to the front of the car is shielded in steel for protection, but that also keeps any small fields contained.

I suspect your watches were loosing time before you got the Prius. You are just watching (pun intended) closer now.

Cool, we must have time dilation technology built into the Prius.

    Thank you gentlemen.

I can assure you that the watches that were loosing time were indeed functionning correctly priort to the arrival of my Prius. I did purchase a Gauss (spelling?) meter and it quite elevated in some areas in the car, especially where the driver is seated, as well as the passenger directly behind the driver.

Now we are not talking about 500$ mechanical watches either. One of them was an Ebel Chronograph worth well over 6000$ new and the other was a DanielJean Richard Diverscope, which is also in the thousands new. Neither of them have iron inner casings to protect from magnatism.

I did mispeak and say de-magnatized, I meant magnatized, which would increase the drag resistance on the balance wheel, hence slowing down the movement.

Now all of this said, I agree, most of the "crap" you read on EMF and the Prius, is just that.... "CRAP". I just find it strange that my watches seem to have been affected. Over the last 13 years, I have owned over 100 different mechanical watches, from Omega to IWC to Rolex to Credor. I know how to handle mechanical watches. In fact, from 1999 to 2005, I was the watch reviews columnist for InSync Magazine in the U.S. I can assure you, nothing has changed in my life, enough anyway to affect the time keeping of my watches. Except the Prius........

Now this could all be a fluke. Maybe, just maybe the last 3 or 4 watches I have owned have needed a tune-up. Maybe. I was simply checking here to see if ANYONE has seen, heard or experienced any problems similar to mine.

Even if I have to wear QUARTZ watches from now on, I would not get ride of my Prius. That is how much I love my car. By the way, I took off the hub-caps on my Touring wheels today because of a post I saw earlier. LOOKS GREAT!

Thanks again for all of your help,

Cannot post a picture, nor a link until, so I attached a picture of my car as my Avatar. After 5 posts, I will be able to post an actual pictures.

I have a $23 digital Timex that I had for maybe 8 years or more. It loses maybe a half minute every couple of months.

But it did that before I got my Prius :)

As they used to say, my Timex "takes a licking, but keeps on ticking!"

I will be the 1st to tell you that a 20$ Timex from Wal-Mart will be 10 times more accurate than ANY Rolex you can purchase. That is not the point. You cannot compare quartz accuracy to a mechanical watch. That being said, mech watches can still be pretty accurate. Mine were more so prior to the Prius....

Any magnetic field with a strong enough gradient to bugger up a mechanical watch will probably bugger up your health too. Especially if you are implanted with a cardiac pacing device

I wonder how a mechanical watch would do in this lab?

    National High Magnetic Field Laboratory

Correct. Part of the problem is that a Gauss meter that is cheaper than $2,500 is very notoriously inaccurate. You are measuring the B field, and getting a precise meter is a costly adventure

Even very precise Gauss meters, the kind used to determine certain calibration and standards testing, can give the uninformed layperson very shocking results. That is, a reading in one area that is 100 times higher than another area. But in context to *what*

The purported health effects of various electromagnetic fields can be found here

WHO | What are electromagnetic fields?

What is the name and model of the meter you purchased? What are the reported readings?

Now, as an experiment, I want you to use that meter around your house, near a microwave oven when heating up a cup of coffee, at the office, when your cell phone or Blackberry is on, under a power line, and, most importantly, in another conventional vehicle

The readings may surprise you, even scare you. Some suggest to avoid >2 milliGauss. Medically, for things like MRI machines, 5 Gauss is considered the maximum safe human exposure to static emf.

So, unless the standards have changed, contrast a reading of 2 milliGauss to 5 Gauss.

Some will also suggest that Guass/emf has supernatural properties and/or imply such an experience. I'm not even going to waste my time getting into that

Thank you for your detailed reply jayman! That sure helps clarify things. I am sure the 50$ Gauss meter I purchased is just that a cheap meter.

I did however try it all around the house and you would be surprised how much it goes crazy near those new compact-fluorescent lights! Anyway, it is rare you will be sitting on your microwave for 2 hours / day. Where as my morning and evening commute is about that. So comparing it to an appliance, does not really work as your exposure is very limited... No?

I do not mean to be argumentative, that is not my intention at all. I am trying to better understand what is happening.

    Thank you again,

I think the problem is that the Prius is way ahead of our time and the mechanical watches are getting envious and just go on strike. I recommend a digital Casio to match the car.

I also wish that the clock in the car would be revamped to something more modern - the one in my 2007 Prius could have been taken from a 1984 Corolla.

Oh, I almost forgot: one time when I was in Maui, I walked into a Rolex store. The sales associate started talking with me, pulled out a gold Rolex, and placed it in my hand. It felt like it weighed a couple of pounds! The price was $42,000. That was the most expensive watch that I've ever seen

But I'm perfectly happy with my $23 Timex!

I paid $50 for a Mickey extra large at Disney. That is the most I ever paid for a watch. Usually I pay $4 at wal-mart.

The watch is fine - the prius just bends time and space.

You'll get a reasonable field near almost any piece of steel (except many common stainless alloys). Have you measured in any other car?

Didn't someone here name his car the tardis here somewhere? :)

It has to be co-incidence, unless... are both of these watches self-winding?
