50.1mpg First time in the 50's!!

I'm averaging 42-43 mpg since I am always in a hurry. I drive like a bat out of hell with no regard to mileage. I mean flooring it at every light, screeching to a stop at the last minute before I decide the red is really red, etc.

This tank I"m not doing that (as much) - leaving in time, using cruise at 35+ etc. so far its 51 mpg. I'll see how the rest of the tank goes (60 miles so far)

This is my first great tank of the year, where the weather is finally warm enough (upper 60's F) that the engine stays hot a long time and the heater is no longer needed. So I'm enjoying that 55 MPG it now says on the Multi-Display.

Hey all,

Triple-T is almost 2 months old. Just over 1,000 miles.

First 1/2 tank (OK, I filled early the first time) - 39mpg
Second tank - 41mpg

I'm still on tank 3 - Computer shows 42mpg

So - It seems to creep up slightly each tank. I'm MOSTLY trying to be a good boy with driving habbits to get good mileage.

My question - Did most of you get in the 40's until your car had more miles on it? I ask because I keep hearing stories of over 50 and over 60 - but I find that hard to beleive that I'll see numbers like that. Also, my buddy has had HIS Prius for about 4 months longer than I and he's getting about 46 - still not in the 50's and he drives more than I do.

So - I know it's a "beaten to death" topic - but what should I do if I want to see numbers in the 50's? Is one thing - waiting until it breaks in - simply something out of my control? What IS in my control?

I'm on my 3rd tank; got 44.5 MPG on the first two. I drive up Parley's Canyon to Park City, Utah, 5 days a week(a 6% grade at times), from 5000 ft to 7000ft...and glide most the way back. I love it!

 

From 45 to 50 mpgs is normal for regular driving. Consistently getting 55 mpg is not fun, unless you enjoy being honked or flashed at. Consistently getting 60 mpg is fiction.

Well, here's some perspective for you.... As you might know, I bought my '04 used with 12K something on the clock. I've consistently seen mid to high 50's with out trying too much (basically, milking the electric as much as I can given traffic conditions, and generally no abrupt throttle inputs). Now that's when the weather has been decent, no need for heat. When the weather turned crappy and cold, I started seeing mid to high 40's... I think there are 2 main things to this: (at least from what I've gathered on this board) 1. break in period, 2. weather

It will be curious to see what happens as your mileage gets higher....

That is my experience too: after 10.000 kms with my Prius.

With avg speeof 80kmh (50mph), I am getting 50MPG (almost always). With higher speed 100-120kmh (62-75mph), my MPG is often 45.

 

In response to jamarimutt, I can't really say because I have only had my car for three days, but it seems to me that this car teaches you how to get the best mileage. I am still on my first tank but I have noticed that early on I was seeing mid 40's. Now that I am learning where the sweet spot is and how to use stealth on the highway by feathering the pedal and just to not be in such a darn hurry, I am now at 52 MPG as calculated by the computer. I am going to try to see if this first tank can get up to 55. If I can do that I will definitely feel like I can learn to really max out this car. It is weird how when you drive this car you suddenly approach driving differently.

I've just done my 10th refill since I bought 'Elettra', with a lifetime MPG of 45.8.
My first tank was 47.1, my worst was 38.8, and my last and best was 50.5
It seems for me about 45 is a reasonable average, for mixed driving near speed limits. Hwy mileage definitely seems lower, driving at 70-75 I average 42-44. In city driving I can get much more, but most of my trips are very short and that's a real mileage killer, so I'm happy if I get my mileage up to 48-50, and the overall avg to 45.

 

I got 40's first 2 tanks, but looking back, I believe it was driving conditions rather than break-in. I idled longer with AC on playing with the nav and other goodies, showing off to friends/family which often meant short trips, and highway driving, especially when I got the O2 sensor check light condition, which the dealer said, "drive it on highway".
Once I calmed down and drove my normal commute route on US19, mileage climbed.

 

Summer is here, and the MPG is easy... :mrgreen:

Seattle is in the 3rd day of a hot weather streak (for us) -- 85-90 degrees F. And I can't get less than 50 MPG for the life of me.
