Please help me, I need advice!

I went to a Toyota dealer this past Saturday and put a $500 deposit on a 2010 Prius II, Blizzard Pearl with Dark Grey interior. The dealer was able to search local dealers and it "found" my exact car that I wanted on a nearby dealer's lot. They said they simply needed to "trade" with the other dealer and the car would be here by Monday or Tuesday, Wednesday at the "absolute latest." Well I asked them today, Thursday, about the status of the delivery and they said that they are still trying to "finalize the trade with the other dealer."

I am scared that they did not originally "find" my exact car, that in fact they only told me that they found it with the hopes that I would put a deposit down and that I wouldn't shop elsewhere. I'm scared that they are just hoping to find a car with my color choices soon and bs me along the way. Today they asked me if I would consider changing my interior color choice.

Am I right in being concerned about them lying about originally finding the exact car of my dreams? Does anyone know how hard it is for one dealer to trade to another?

Thanks for your help I really want my Pearl (that's the name I have given her). :(

Should I give them a time period for them to "finalize the trade"? Should I start shopping at other dealers?

Maybe the other dealer doen't want to give up the car...

Maybe. I'm just worried that after 5 days they still haven't been able to "finalize" a trade.

It is not unreasonable to give your dealer (the one you put down deposite with) a deadline for getting it. If they fail to do so, you could then proceed to buy it directly from the other dealer that has it now. That makes sense for everyone involved.

When a dealer trade with another, basically, some negotiations and past relationship (between them) come into play. I got my CX9 from a dealer I like, and it was a trade from another dealer from 50 miles away. The dealer wanted to charge me $200 for this trade (for their effort to get the vehicle, you know, sending people to drive it over). I refused, and eventually such extra charge was waived. However, I ended up with my CX9 that had 56 miles on the odometer, which was not a surprise to me.

Sounds to me like they don't actually have access to the exact car you want. Especially since they're asking you if you'd consider alternative interior color choices. If I were you, I would ask them at which dealer is the car? Get the name of the dealer and who they spoke to over there and call that dealer yourself. If you find you've been lied to, demand your $500 back and shop somewhere else.

Give them a deadline or time you will be in to get your deposit. I don't know your dealer, but if it was available, they would have gotten it AND the rest of your money. Another interior color sounds fishy too. Tell the any color except Bisque and see what they say. Bisque is about 40% bisque and the rest is light GREY. Cargo area, headliner, shelf under the center console, front window pilar and half the door pilar are all light grey.

Thanks for the quick responses everybody : )

azgringo, I think that is a GREAT idea! If I can call and verify that my dream Prius actually exists, I would feel much better!

They actually asked if I would consider Bisque, and they said that most of the Blizzard Pearls come with the Bisque interior.

I know how you feel. When I bought mine, I wanted the dark gray, but ended up settling for black (which I like...but I have to wash it all the time!)

Don't settle. Get the one you want! Another idea....(I've done this in the past with the last car I bought and it worked out well)...call as many local dealers that you can and tell each one exactly what you're looking for and let them know you're shopping other dealers. You'll have these dealers eating from your hand. They'll be aggressive about finding the car you're looking for and they'll also probably be more open to negotiations since they know you're shopping a bunch of other dealers. Good luck!

Thank you so much. I have tried to keep my emotions out of the car buying process and not get my hopes up or settle for anything, but after we negotiated a final price and they "found" the car, I couldn't help but get excited. I've been sleeping like a kid on Christmas Eve since last Saturday. . .

If you asked for one in Pepto Pink the salesman would have told you the same thing. I believe they are looking for a car you will settle for but don't know how hard they are looking. Deposits should always come with conditions. Keep searching through dealer inventories as you may find what you want. As has been mentioned elsewhere Toyota builds to order all over the world except here so if you aren't in a hurry hold out for what you want. I don't believe the auto industry has recovered to the point where the customer doesn't have the leverage. If you are going to settle insist on paying less.

Haha! I tried to think that my salesman was not like the stereotypical salesman, but maybe I trusted him too much. As far as settling for less I told them that if they weren't able to get me the dark grey interior I would "settle" for a Prius III, IV, or V with a different colored interior. . . and no additional cost either : )

Try and find the car dealership on Carmax or cars.com etc, using your zip code. Then try and negotiate a deal with that dealer instead of the one you are waiting on.

    I just got this email!!

    Kaleb,

Just wanted to let you know that we did secure the vehicle. Sorry it took you so long to get back to you. We are kind of swamped this evening. We are sending drivers tomorrow to pick up the vehicle.

    Thanks,
    Greg.

I hate to tell you guys but right now this is a sellers market, especially for the Gen III Prius. I have had my order in for a specific package IV color with S.Roof now since June 2, and still dont even have a VIN or date when the dealer might actualy get one.
The dealer I am with I have bought from before and I trust them, but I have to tell you I have been watching their invintory closely. Every other week they get about 14 to 16 Gen III's and in a matter of a day or two after the cars show up on their lot they are almost all gone, maybe one or two remaining in a dog combo. I just visited the dealer again this week and they told me this cash for clunkers deal is making the market even hotter.
However it depends on what you want for your color and package combo, the higher demand right now is for the higher end vehicles like the III, IV and V with extra options.
I have also been searching on the web for other dealers that might have what I want and I havent seen one yet, so I am still waiting with a deposit of $500 down and not willing to accept any other options than exactly what I want.

Good luck to all of you who are waiting!!!!:focus:

I had a similar experience and the dealer wasn't able to trade with the other dealer. They have to have a car the other dealer will trade for. So, I put $500 down and waited five weeks for my car to come in. The wait is hard when you're excited about it, but you'll be glad to have exactly what you want when it arrives. Don't settle - you'll regret it later. Hope they find your car soon, but in the meantime, go ahead and place your order in case they don't. That way you should get your car in about four to six weeks. We were also told that if the price of gas goes up significantly, so does the number of orders for the Prius, thus extending your wait time.
