If you happen to see large green tomatoes painted on the sides of a Prius in London, (England) here's the reason:
    http://www.greentomatocars.com/

They're advertising for drivers "with a good knowledge of London" so evidently they don't have much confidence in the Nav system!

Just got back from London last week and only saw one prii the whole time there which was 9 days! Spent most of the time in the Kensington area, as well as all the usual tourist stops.

The owners might be thinking of tomatillos - "green tomatoes" used in cooking.

That was probably Prince Charles. He uses his only when in London. I think Buck Palace is in Kensington.

Buckingham Palace, St. James Palace and Clarence House, which is adjacent to St. James's Palace, shares its garden and is where HRH the Prince of Wales resides, are located in the City of Westminster. Kensington Palace is in Kensington Gardens in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

This is just WAY too cool. I don't suppose this venture has anything at all to do with the Central London Congestion Charge being waived for Prii? As to the NAV system, well, they do have their quirks, don't they? But I guess the Greentomatocar drivers maybe don't have to pass the same direction/location knowledge tests that the black cab drivers do? (Or do THEY have to do that anymore anyway, or have London taxi drivers taken lessons from the New York ones? )

If you intend visiting London and using taxis you should know the difference between the traditional "black cab" (these days not all are black) and an ordinary car operating as a "private hire vehicle", sometimes called a minicab..

With a black cab you can be pretty sure of getting a knowledgeable driver and a cab with proper metering clearly showing the passenger the price of the journey. "Black cabs" and their drivers are licensed by the Public Carriage Office.

Yes, THIS was what I meant. I do love it when old traditions that WORK are kept up! I would also love it if American cities would institute a similar program--I am so tired of being at the mercy of people whose only qualification for the job of taxi driver is the possession of a taxi...New York DOES surprise me in a way--it costs so much to buy the medallion for a taxi, I would think the people who own them would want them to be seen to be of high value through service...nahhhh.

But I guess now with NAV/GPS systems so widely available (and I do believe I have even seen one in a London Black Cab, which may or may not have been black...but the not black ones are SACRILEGE! And they shouldn't need them in Black Cabs, should they?), nobody has to learn how to get anywhere. I don't have the NAV in my Prius, but I bought a small GPS. I love flipping it out by taking a different turn than it recommends and waiting to see how long it takes to catch me up...Simple pleasures for simple minds...
