So I've owned my new 2010 Prius for 3 days now and while slowly cruising down a city street, albeit with the usual LA bumps, I notice a fairly load rattle in the dash, somewhere around the gauges. I brought this to the attention of the local dealer and they were surprised to hear about it happening in the Gen. III (I guess is was common in Gen. II).

They said they can fix it, but having a shop tear apart my brand new car is less than thrilling.

Anyone else had this happen... yet?

I did ... it's on the driver's side by the upper dash near the speaker-ish area ... I think it has disappeared recently though. For now, I just turn up the stereo.

turning up the radio is the easiest fix :D

That really sux that your dash it rattling already. Just take it to the service center so that they can add some insulation to the area. FYI eventually the vehicle will begin to rattle from other places. I am salesperson and drive these vehicles every day and I can tell you that even our high quality Toyota's cannot get away from rattling parts...

I had some noise on the passenger side. Turns out wife put that yellow card in the upper glove box and it was making noise. Should be some type of felt or rubber mat in there.

With the upper glove box open I tapped on the door and the clips rattle. May be a source for future noise.

Only rattles I have at 1900 miles are doors where the speakers are if a ton of bass is present in the music. Otherwise, seems pretty tight!

I have a rattle on the driver's side dash area by the front speaker. Took it to Putnam Toyota in Burlingame, CA where they added some foam from the factory. I took it back a couple days later when I noticed that the tech scratched a panel. I'm waiting for a new panel to come in so that my damaged panel can get replaced.

Big time pain in the nice person.

    Rick,
When you have that "ton of bass" does your rearview keep up with the beat? ie - vibrate. That was one of the initial things I noticed during my first 10 minutes after picking up the car. The mirror mountings are all tight and secure. Seems as if the windshield may have a resonant frequency or the front dash speakers vibrate the windshield enough to cause the issue. I have my bass set on 2, normal volume, and no rap music. :music:

Hmm - thought I'd google just now. Found in a Lexus IS Forum:

FIXED: Dash Noise and RV Mirror vibration TSB
Just wanted to let the forum know that even though my 07 IS250 MT was not part of the recall campaign, I too had the problem with the noisy dash and rear view mirror vibration - they were both fixed under warrantee.

OMG - what a difference....the noisy dash was killing me on these friggen' New England roads - the RV mirror was un useable with the sunroof open (or the music cranking).....they were both fixed and I could not be happier.

I have the same issue. Bought mine about a week ago and it rattles annoyingly with the radio on or off. If I hit the top of the dash it will go away for a while but seems to come back the next morning. I am planning on taking back to the dealer for a fix, but I am a little disappointed to have a rattle so early in my car's life.

Sorry to hear that you're having the same problem. I've had my rattle for a good 700 miles now or nearly two months (luckily I don't drive much), though I have not had time to take it in for the full day or two it will take to fix. I'm also reluctant to turn over my spotless, chipless, unmarked car to a mechanic to tear the dash out and have it come back in who knows what condition. The fact is, we should NOT be dealing with this and I wonder how many others out there have this problem. Definitely puts a shadow of regret on the purchase...

The only "rattle" I've ever noticed comes from my water bottles. If I have one in the door, it rattles once in awhile...same if I have a bottle in the cup holder in the center console.

I too have a rattle on the upper right side of the dash at all speeds. This began after the car was one week old. Brought the car back at first oil change for this but they could not find it of course. I thought it was coming fron the glove compartment hinges, air filter beneath the dash, upper right dash speaker. Anything that could possibly create movement. The thought of one of the mechanics ripping the dash open would make me loose sleep. The service manager documented my complaint and said they would keep a lookout for a recall. Whatever..Guess I'll have to live with this. It has made me second guess Toyota Q/C , but not to the point where I regret the purchase. Anyone have any suggestions?

Just like the console squeak in the '07 Camry Hybrid, Toyota will eventually figure this stuff out and issue a Technical Service Bulletin.

I would suggest popping the hood and checking very closely the arm that holds up the hood when you want to work under the hood. I had the exact same rattle as you straight off the lot. I had to take it back the day I bought it, and they found that the arm was loose. I don't know if they had to actually screw something in tighter, or if it was because some idiot during the 'make ready' process closed the hood before securing the arm withing its clasp. But it was an easy fix, and would definitely be something I would check out if I were you.

On my way home from the dealership I noticed a severe rattling, almost grating, noise at freeway speeds whenever I accelerate or decelerate. The noise seems to be coming from the passenger side. It doesn't seem superficial and seems to be coming from the engine compartment. Has anyone else experienced this?

So I took the car back to the dealer and the tech found the sound originated from a hood prop-rod that wasn't latched to the hood. Sigh.

When I read your first post I was going to tell you to read the post right above it and save yourself a trip, but figured you had to have ruled that out already.

Yep! Bought mine June 21st 2009. I was leery of the plasticky dashboard and interior. Sure enough, clicks and rattles all over.

The big rattle it seems we all have in common is the drivers side up by the speaker near the window. It sounds like a dragonfly is flapping around inside trying to get out. Very annoying. If i could, I would take this car back and buy a used car for $3k. I paided $26k to be annoyed???

I hope they recall them. If it weren't for these noises, it wouldn't bother me so much that my first new car is inferior in quality and drives me up a wall with the rattling.
