Thanks to all for your outpouring of love, affection and misdirected humor!!:D

Sorry to quote only Maggie and Stream, but they were the two most recent and covered the gamut to my satisfaction!

Yes, this kind of love hurts a bit. Material possessions really have no place in the world of love, but I'm just as flawed as the next Prius lover!! I'll make it . . . I think.

Truly, the good news is that no one was injured or even put in harm's way. I've lost hours of work time (and a good bit of income), but I've gained an appreciation for the good work done by some insurance claims adjusters, agents, car repair shops, and, thankfully, honest drivers!

    Man! That's horrible. I'm sorry.

Two weeks ago I was hit (while stopped in traffic) by a Dodge Ram. Luckily he pulled over, probably due to the fact that he was in a company truck so I could call the business and complain if he fled. Anyway, no damage just dirt exchange on my rear right bumper.

Three days after that someone in front of me, going 50 mph which is the speed limit, ran over a piece of metal about the size of a license plate. This piece of metal shot back at me so quickly that I didn't have any time to react. It ended up hitting my front right bumper and taking a bunch of the paint with it. From what I can see there's no dings or bumps just paint transfer. Still ticked me off though.

    Oh, the metallic carnage!

Daylight (with a better camera) provides these views:

For those who've ever wondered where an SUV would smack a Prius, if it could just reach out and slap one, here's a glimpse:

For those who like to see more than one image in a drawing or photograph, you may find more than you originally are looking for in each of these three pictures. While the distortion is just about as bad as what happened to the "hybrid" badge, there is an image of the photographer visible in the above pic. (No, he's not smiling!)

Makes me want to cry, but accidents do happen.

Several years ago I took my wife's RAV4 out to get gas. I pulled out of the garage, down the driveway and BAM. Slammed into the neigbor's "grandma's" car which was parked on the side opposite my driveway on a very narrow street.

No damage to the RAV, but pretty much mangled grandma's door (yes, I pushed it in really good).

Of course, I had to ring my neighbor's bell and fess up to the act. Grandma wasn't too happy, but my neighbor was understanding and the fact that I had good insurance.

The funniest was when I called my insurance company to report the claim and they asked "who's fault was it"? I replied "I guess it was mine, since the other car was parked with no one in it". DOH!

One year into owning my 2005 Prius, I was stopped at a stoplight in Chicago. When the light turned green, I heard this awful scraping sound from the driver's rear quarter panel side. One of those full fledged trucks with the lug nuts that stick out hit me and I had 4 perfect circular dents and scrapes from the protruding lug nuts.

Of course the driver denied it was his fault (how else could the driver's rear quarter panel be hit?). All in all, I immediately took pictures with my phone. I contacted the company he worked for, emailed my info and the pics. About a month and a half later I received a check in the mail for my deductible ($500). Car was repaired to perfection.

They do, and I guess we need to roll with them -- as best we can, anyway. As you've experienced, you know the shoe could be on the other foot tomorrow.

They ask the question because so many people will not fess up to it. In fact, my insurer said nothing would happen until her insurer determined the fault. When I said: "But, the car was parked. Against the curb. In a place where parking is allowed on a public street." The response: "OK. And nothing will happen until her insurer determines fault."

i also got hit today in parking lot. a sweet ole lady backed into me. my damage no where near yours, but because of metal flake paint matching issues, they have to repaint the ENTIRE SIDE. just got back from collision shop...$1084.76 to fix.

    bummer...

    Ouch!!

You have my simultaneous apology, condolences, and sympathy.

My car is already in the shop.

Funny thing? The rental is through Enterprise (via the other party's insurer) and they felt like I just won a prize. The reason? I got their Dodge Charger with a Hemi in it (and 40k miles . . . and smells). They were thrilled with the car (". . .and it has Satellite radio!!"). It's OK, I suppose, but it just isn't my Prius.

well, i must say, mine is pretty minor compared to yours. impact was the point of the rear passenger fender. the dent is small enough it can be pulled out, but the guy says its impossible to match the metal flake. so they have to repaint the entire panel (which is the piece that runs up over the doors) and the door to make it match. wont match the other side, but would be nearly impossible to notice the difference without them being side by side.

i talked with lady involved and she does not want to file an insurance claim and is sending me check for repairs, so the money issue should be cleared up in a few days

Wow! She'd rather pay better than $1,000 than file a claim? For what other purpose did she buy her insurance?

The woman who hit me had the same desire. I took all of her insurance information, agreeing not to make a claim until I got her an estimate of the costs. She called me back before I got the estimate to her, and she had already decided to make a claim.

Even before making a formal estimate, the guy at the repair shop took one look and said: "At least $2,000."

well haven't received check yet so she could be snowing me too. but she did not really complain that much. who knows? she could have gave me a bogus insurance card. she was at Clarus Eye Center, driving a brand new Focus, and she was dressed nice.

maybe for her, a $1000 aint that much money. now, if it had been me that did it, i might consider it, especially since i have a $500 deductible.

Don't forget, though, that the $500 deductible applies only to repairs to her car. Her property insurance portion (the part that covers you) should be a first-dollar policy. She shouldn't have any out-of-pocket costs for your repairs (only for hers).

I had my red 2010 about 2 weeks and was rear ended at a stop light. I will be with out the car for about 4 to 5 weeks as parts must be Japan .... what a bummer!

I definitively sympathize. Last year, in downtown Chicago, someone hit the side of my CR-V and almost hit 2 more cars while running away. Luckily, there was not much damage and there was no need to file an insurance claim. Last time I was in Chicago with my Odyssey, somebody hit the back of it when trying to parallel park but, again, luckily, nothing major happened. The guy that hit it, just finished parking, got out of the car, and left totally ignoring the situation! This Saturday I will be in Downtown Chicago again, first time with my Prius, visiting with my brother and Mom before dropping them off at ORD, and of course, I’m wondering if my Prius will get hit too. Wish me luck!

Oh crap...that's not good news for me. I have a TON of parts that are going to need to be replaced, so I can only imagine how long it's going to take to get all the parts, plus the time to install them.

Estimate is currently at $13k and rising. You know it's bad when it takes them over a week just to do the estimate...

Many drivers don't want the claim to avoid rates going back up. When I was rear ended before, the driver wanted to pay separately, and I declined simply because my then expecting wife was required to visit OB Triage by her doctor and the medical payment from the ins company was far in excess of what he expected a "repairs only" deal to cost. I sympathized for his situation, but in the end, I much rather deal w/ insurance vs. someone who "says" they'll pay.

    David,

Sorry to hear about your plight! That is really awful -- two weeks with your Prius is just enough to get hooked, but not enough to even experience half of the car's benefits and joys.

I'm beginning to worry a bit, myself, because the shop called yesterday to say not all of the parts were available, but they "hoped" to have them by Friday or Monday -- so my car would be available Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.

Still, I'd only be out one week if is was ready by Monday!

    Thanks, Indy. I appreciate it!

I'm trying to remember a time I went into the city and didn't come out with a ding or scratch (or more) . . . Well, there was a time I just dropped my father off and drove away . . .

Parking is the killer. The ramps have very tight parking, and parking next to an SUV is a guarantee of dings -- especially if young children have to try to open those heavy rear doors and keep them from hitting the car in the next space. (That is one reason I like to park on the passenger side of a minivan -- the sliding door doesn't do any damage!)

Why not drive your brother's car?

I know the answer -- you like your Prius too much! OK, maybe not for the zip or the cush, but definitely for the mileage and cargo space. Good luck to you!

We just changed our plans... my wife and kids want to come too and take the opportunity to spend perhaps the last summer weekend in Chicago, so we're driving the Odyssey instead. Bummer! I like my Odyssey, but I was dying to drive my first road trip in my Prius!

Well, I will start driving it back and forth to WI in few weeks, so that will be fun. I will be posting the data for my trips here, with the influence of cargo weight and weather changes on the MPG.

Enjoy!! Chicago really is a great city, particularly for a family in the summer. Plan to spend time at one or more of the beaches. Go to Millenium Park. If you don't go to attend a baseball game (Cubs are out of town this weekend, Sox are at home), you can at least drive by a stadium -- Wrigleyville offers a bit more entertainment. Get on the El for a ride (it is one way to get to Wrigley and back). Go to the Museum of Science and Industry if it is too hot or it rains. See the Art Institute!! See what neighborhoods are having art fairs or block parties and go! Take the architectural tour on a boat -- fun, interesting and a way to stay cool. Walk out on Navy Pier. Go to Pizzeria Uno's and carve your name into a bench. Leave the kids at the hotel and go to a play in one of the numerous small theaters in town. Go for some swedish pancakes and incredible cinammon roles at Ann Sather's.

Well . . . that's enough for one day, anyway.

    Enjoy!
