OK, first and foremost, I have nothing against gays, it is just I am am a burly guy, I own a diesel truck and now I have this "gay" car as Jeff Dunham puts it. No, it is not powder blue. :D But I cannot get my friends from chastising me over this dam car. I like the way it drives, love the fuel mileage. Even my daughter said she was going to buy me a rainbow air freshener.

So today, I dropped $1800 on custom Katskin 2 tone leather and tinted windows. Next will be to smoke the tail lights. Any other ideas to make it more of a man's car? Or no matter what I do, guys will wink at me? Should I start to wear socks and sandals?

I bought this for mileage and nothing more, but man, I need to get this thing looking better.

    Any suggestions?

Well, I guess when you work in construction as I do, and you roll up on the job site from driving a big diesel truck to a Prius, some can only wonder. I really wanted that Subaru wrx si.:pound:

I think the number one thing you can do to improve the look of a Prius (or really most cars) is to tint the windows. Eventually big diesel trucks will be things of the past, so everyone else will have to get over their insecurities one day. Screw 'em!

Yes. Don't worry about it. Any aesthetic modifications should be to your personal taste, not the perceptions of others. You could tell people that you bought your Prius to strike a blow in the War on Terror, and you'd be right! What have your homophobic coworkers done to destroy al Qaeda? If they're not taking steps to reduce their own oil consumption, then they're actually aiding the enemy. Behold! Your Prius is a weapon, all the more deadly because of its innocent appearance:

Well you could try moving up to 16 or 17 inch wheels and get fatter tires like 205/16 or better, I believe they also offer better handling too. The ones it came with are pretty wimpy looking so that may add to the "gayness".

I don't know if you watch the movie "A Knight's Tale", but you might consider your Prius is just like Heath Ledger's new armor. Remember the scene where all the other knights in their burly, hulking armor laughed and poke fun of Ledger when he came out with this small,shiny/gayish armor? How they suddenly stopped when he suddenly got on his horse unaided? People are just so used to a certain way of thinking that anything new that deviant from the norm is going to get laugh at. In the mean time you can laugh at them as their F150 pulls into the gas station while you fsssh by.

Go ahead, embrace it. Let your true feelings come out and open the door of your closet and step forth. You know there was something deep in your mind pushing you towards the Prius.

Oh, BTW, I'm sure there are some big burley guys driving diesel pickups that are gay too.

Anthony, there's nothing gay about the Prius. For me, it's a tool to get me back and forth to work and anywhere else I might want to go cheaply. It puts cash back in my pocket so I can do other things that I want to do with it. It's a mind set and once you start enjoying how much it doesn't cost you to drive it, you'll no longer care. Trust me, the guys giving you a hard time are wishing they were saving the same cash you are.

Just don't add a coffee can muffler and neon lights underneath, OK? ;)

There is nothing more "gay" than homophobia, and this is not the place for any of it. This entire thread is inappropriate and needs to be removed.

I gigled a bit when I read this. Being gay myself, I'm not offended by the OP. I am offended a bit when I hear people (mostly middle-high school kids  ) say something like "That's so gay."

The OP reminded me of something my partner said a little while back:

Him - "Well, there's another good thing about getting a Prius."
    Me - "What's that?" (Excitement!)
Him - "It'll save you having to tell people you're gay."
    Me - *snort* (Disappointment)

I thought he was finally not thinking I was insane. I think he's going to strangle me if I say the word "Prius" one more time.

This is at least the second thread here on PriusChat contrasting 'manly' with 'adult'. As a man, it embarrasses me that there is a difference.

You have made a mature adult decision to drive a car that is minimizing several global problems AND saving you gas money. Losing some of that emissions/mileage/noise advantage to be more 'manly' denies your adulthood.

Perhaps you could show your manhood like this Prius:

or perhaps not. I am sticking with being an adult. (as my Sig shows I failed at being a child)

I think you should laugh with them instead of trying to change the car. Show them that what they say doesn't bother you. If you casually slap one of them on the butt, I bet everyone would fall over laughing. LOL. They don't really think you're gay and in a short time they'll grow tired of talking about your car.

Hey man! I know how you feel. I had a 2006 Landrover LR3 before this, which is an incredibly badass SUV. It's a weird feeling going from a hulking SUV your entire life (last 12 years I've been driving them) to a tiny car. The Prius isn't gay though. Maybe some of the other Hondas and Toyotas look extremely wussy, but the Prius is different. It's an incredible piece of technology, and to be honest, I don't know why anyone would get a car and not get a Prius. Why would anyone buy an equally priced car and get less MPG?

I was surprised that all my friends loved the Prius as much as I did when I showed it to them. I had one friend that kinda ribbed me about it being a girly car - but he was mostly kidding, and he's in a huge amount of debt trying to pay off a big SUV he bought. I paid cash for my Prius, so mine is paid off. Some people don't think :)

I think you are on the right track getting window tint (mine came tinted, but I had it stripped and re-tinted very dark), and with leather seats (what colors did you go with for the two-tone?) If you have the 15" wheels with hubcaps that would be a good thing to change. I'm looking for 17" wheels, but I'd like to get the factory ones. Or at least aftermarket ones that look like factory wheels (any suggestions, anyone?) You can replace the factory stereo system too - leave the actual CD player thing (the head unit) and have an audio shop put a amp under the passenger seat and replace the door speakers. Mine did it for about $600, and it sounds infinitely better than the stock system and you can't tell anything was done to it. Just keep it clean and nice.

You're not gay, you're a homosexual. Stop stealing our words. :)

Most respectfully sir, I need to say something. I am probably one of the youngest here in this forums, I am 22 years old. It is mostly at my age and younger when one's acquaintances and friends would teasingly dwell in childish comments that feed on sexism. Things that I found increasingly annoying such as "a man who hugs his guy-friends must be gay" or "only women can be hair stylists." Nevertheless, the keyword term here is "at my age and younger." I would certainly hope that when I am a bit older, all of my friends and acquaintances would have evolved enough to abstain themselves from such comments. Now, the examples of sexist remarks I have given are quite common and are at some degree, at the very least, from a discernable origin. In contrast, implying the aesthetics of a car would define one's sexuality is absolutely ridiculous. Stereotypes have their origin in that a stereotype is true to at least a small denomination of the group of people towards which said stereotype is applied. For instance, it is stereotype all asian kids with traditional parents are forced to become doctors. That is certainly not true for every asian out there, but as someone who is married to a vietnamese woman, I can honestly tell you, there is some truth to the stereotype; hence the stereotype's existence. Now if somebody would be to kind as to explain to me in what basis does anybody claim the interior or exterior of a certain car is "gay" or not? Let alone the interior of a Prius 2010?! It is most outrageous, I must say.

Now in order to properly condemn the comments of Mr. Anthony's friends, I must say how severely sexist comments can affect our society. In the transition from the nineteenth to the 20th century, electric cars already existed. They basically looked like carriages without a horse. They were a luxury. However, due to the fact they were heavily advertised with an aim towards women, all men saw electric cars as a heavily female-decorated cabin, complete with floral arrangements and things of the sort. Now do remember, during this time, sexism was a trend, not a crime. So here comes Henry Ford with a combustion engine, which is advertised mostly towards men. Thus, the public-to-be car buyers had a choice: electric car full of pink flowers or a macho men's VROOM! VROOM! combustion machine. And trust me, they really did have a choice. But which one did they choose? I think we all know the answer to that. The outcome? A world so heavily polluted that has cities with so much smog that mere breathing in there for the first time can get you sick? (mexico city) How about global warming? How about all the wars for the sake of a little bit of oil? And all because humanity was too blind to see the electric car beyond its pretty floral arrangements. Good job sexists of the early twentieth century, good job.

Yes, I do know electric cars were not as distance-efficient as a combustion engine. However, the very first race car Dr. Porsche ever made was electric. Do you honestly think if we had picked electric cars, we couldn't have quickly developed a way to make them more efficient? I think we could have. Maybe it could have resulted in an early hybrid. Who knows. Whatever the case, there is not the slightest doubt in my mind that sexist views were, at the very least, a contributing factor in mankind's decision in favor of the combustion engine over an electric car.

Please Mr. Anthony, I appeal to your common sense, ignore you friends.

The guy works in construction. Those are rough, stinky, smelly dudes that bust their butts every day working. They would probably through a 2x4 at you if you preached to them like you did in this post :)

Guys tend to call cars "gay" if they are girly looking. It's because the body lines of the car don't appeal to their sexuality. Take a Honda Civic vs a Ferrari. Or a Toyota Scion vs a Range Rover. It's easy to see which of those cars is more "manly" and which would probably be considered "gay." I've always wondered why a car company doesn't make a car that looks like an exotic and put it on some econobox chassis and sell it for $15000. You'd make a lot of money!

You can paint the hubcaps gloss black. Looks good with tinted windows.
