    Yep, that's right. All cars generally cost 3X or more in SG. For every car we bought, 2 cars (in the value of tax & COE) go to the gov.

    For e.g. The Camry 2.4 cost about USD 72K at that time, now is maybe less...

    '04/'05 is not available in SG.

    I have the breakdown of the cost structure in my spreadsheet.

    Is that just for cars? To keep people on the public transit rather than clogging the streets with 1 driver private cars?

    The Classics were not selling well. Borneo only sold 16; 4 to private owners and 12 to Institutions. They had discontinued it since 2003.

    There are rumours that they might bring in the '05 or '06.

    I have it in the spreadsheet.

    It used to cost SGD 1.185 per litre (CAD 0.90) back in 2003 and now is SGD 1.445 (CAD 1.10).

    It's around 80-90¢/litre here (probably more nearer Toronto). And despite the higher prices, the Prius doesn't sell well?

    From what I gather in the other forum, they were put off by the high price upfront. It cost at least USD 15K more than a comparable size 1.5L like the Corolla. Petrol price is usually not a consideration during purchasing since they already paid so much for the car! They are less than willing to pay more to be green.

    Ahh I see. Were there any government incentives?

    Cause they way I see it, that might be the reason. I don't believe Australia had any incentives for purchasing the Prius or any other hybrids (perhaps an Australian PriusChatter could confirm that?) so that lead to poor sales.

    Yes, there are rebates of 20% of OMV and 10% of Road Tax for Hybrid vehicle. That would amount to about USD 3,770 for 10 years.

    Based on my current usage, if the Road Tax and Petrol price do not increase for the next 7 years (unlikely), Prius is only about USD 5K more than a Corolla. With the higher manufacturing cost and more advance technologies of Prius, it is definitely more worth it. Besides, there is also the intangible benefits of doing my part for Mother Earth.

    Our gov are more concern about congestion than emission. A green car occupy the same road space as any other car. They would rather "encourage" people to take public transport than vehicle ownership.

    I think there is not a single factor that lead to poor sales. The higher petrol prices in some part of EU (USD 5/gallon!) do not necessary guarantee good sales.

    True. The MRT is quite efficient.

    Hmm, it depends I guess. Here in Canada, the Prius starts at $30,330 or about mid-range of the Camry ($25-$36k).

    Although the Camry and Corolla in S'pore is better equipped than ours.

    Edit: Our incentive varies by province. In BC, it's $1,000 or 30% of the provincial sales tax (at 7%) whichever is lower. In Ontario and PEI, it's up to $2,000. I'm not sure about the incentives in other provinces and territories.

    I'm an aussie, I'm getting am iTech pack (JBL Satnav, keyless etc) for AUD$ 41300 but I don't pay GST, there are NO incentives in OZ but hey this is a concious decision to do something isn't it?

    In Oz we don't really suffer from low sales - more like "poor supply" !
    Every Prius is pre-sold months ahead, similar to US.
    Unfortunately, Japan is flat out supplying the rest of the world and we just get what dribbles through.
    I haven't seen any sign of incentives, like reduced taxes/stamp duty, registration fees, etc.
    The general public don't seem to know about the car (no ads around) so there is no pressure on our Government to ease the cost of purchasing one.
    Those of us that can afford the extra cost are buying them anyway, and we are certainly very happy with this Hybrid machine.

    Well, when we bought ours in Oct 04, the incentives were 30% or $1,000 (whichever is smaller) rebate on the PST (provincial sales tax) paid on the car. Now, the gov't is giving a full PST rebate up to $2,000! We got a $768 rebate for ours. $2,000 would've been nice. But yeah, no buyer's remorse. I just broke my tank record! (which is probably the average/normal for you guys without the bladder =P)

    It's not the bladder, it is the climate that matters.

    It is also not uncommon for you guys/gals to get good mpg in summer. :D
