Curiosity Addressed: Sales, Owners & More

    We've just passed the 3 month mark since launching the Prius in the US and as a thank you for all of your support, we thought we'd add a little detail to the interesting conversations/polls taking place on Prius Chat.

    Many of you have posted threads asking about your fellow Prius owners, their packages, colors choices, or even where they bought. We thought we'd chime in with some real world information.

    Let's start with sales and popularity: With over 40,000 3rd Generation Prius sold since launch, Prius II remains our core model accounting for roughly a third of all Prius sales. However, with the new Solar Roof technology, one in ten people have opted for either a Prius III or Prius IV with the Solar Roof package and another one in ten were drawn to the Prius V with its LEDs and 17" wheels. Apparently about 3% of you love your technology and just had to have the Advanced Technology Package with the IPA, DRCC, LKA and PCS. Blizzard Pearl is a true favorite exterior color with Classic Silver following not far behind, and Winter Gray a good step down but holding a strong 3rd place position. Classic Silver with Dark Gray Interior takes the most popular color combo with Blizzard Pearl and Bisque Interior coming in second. Southern CA leads national sales by a good bit, followed by the mid-Atlantic states. OK, sure, availability certainly plays a role so let's keep that in mind when looking at these sales figures.

    Now for who our Prius buyers are:
    Doug has shared some basic info in past posts on what we look at when it comes to our buyers, but here are some additional pieces to the puzzle. Towards the end of 2nd generation sales, we knew the average Prius buyers were late 50's pushing 60. They were roughly 50/50 male/female (but leaning a little more female towards the end of the generation), highly educated with very solid household incomes, and many of them were already retired. 35% of shoppers considered a 2nd choice model, while 65% shopped only for Prius. Those that did consider other models tended to mainly look at the Civic Hybrid with no real consistent strong runner up. 15% of those shoppers were replacing another Prius.

    Now let's wind the clocks forward to May and take a look at our most recent buyers, those that opted for a 3rd Generation Prius. Overall, you're considerably more male, a little younger, a little more employed than retired (mostly professionals such as Doctors, Lawyers, Scientists, Teachers etc), and you're a little more ethnically diverse than the late 2nd generation buyers. 62% of you are now considering other models, perhaps due to more options to choose from such as the Insight which took Civic Hybrid's place in the most cross shopped vehicle (with Civic hybrid becoming next in line and Fusion Gas and Jetta Diesel making appearances in the top 5 cross-shopped vehicles). Now for the big one, a whopping 75% of you say the 2010 Prius is your first hybrid (welcome aboard!).

    One other interesting piece of info for you...we've been watching some trends and it appears our Prius loyalists were certainly the majority of buyers early on in say May/June. Once this wave of repeat Prius buyers got theirs, the more recent buyers have had a dramatically broader profile, with the male % leveling off a bit, the median age continuing to decrease and those buying their first hybrid drastically increasing since launch. As for shopping habits, they too mimic a broader buyer with those considering other models increasing, the % trading in a Prius decreasing over time and the effect of cash for clunkers program can definitely be seen in the trade-in models, ages and brands as well. So there is clear evidence that passion for Prius is spreading!

    Thanks for these facts, as they are very interesting. My comment for the moment will be only on the one mentioned above.

    Would it be fair to say then, that the percentage of folks buying a Hybrid for the first tie is falling? I imagine that when the first Gen I car was sold it was sold to a first time hybrid buyer. The same is probably true of the early Gen II sales. If so, then it would seem that the "Whopping" 75% of first time hybrid buyers is likely much lower than the ratio of those early buyers...

    Either way, it is clear to us that you have succeeded in making a great car even better! Thanks for the insight! This may quiet a few folks concerns about where the buyers are coming from.

    I'm also one of the first-time hybrid buyers (or will be once my III makes its way to the dealership from Newark).

    I would have liked to have been a SR owner, but the cursed regional dealers decided that we had to upgrade to the IV in order to get that option.

    I think it would have been very progressive to offer these features on any trim level Prius. I've seen Toyota presentations on these systems for a few years at traffic safety conferences and was encouraged when I read that they would be available on a non-luxury class vehicle. I would have happily paid for this package if I didn't have to buy all sorts of other stuff I didn't want. While I understand that cost prevents them from being standard across the line, I am quite disappointed that they were not available a la carte.

    Incidentally, we are also first time hybrid buyers. My wife is the primary driver.

    I think it's clear that the updated design and the new features have made the Gen 3 Prius very desirable to a wider group of people. Now you don't have to sacrifice the goodies for maximum fuel effieciency - you can get great MPG, AND a sporty look AND cool features! What's not to love?

    I'm very happy to be a new member of the hybrid movement!!

    Even if that happens, people would still have to decide between Advanced Technology package and Solar Roof due to weight issues.

    I'm surprised the top 3 selling colors are White, Silver and Winter Grey (as opposed to "richer" colors like Red and Blue). That said, it does this Winter Grey Prius owner proud to see us in the Top 3. It's also not surprising to see the Prius II claim a third of the sales.

    Yes, safe to say when hybrids were brand new, the only buyers were first time hybrid buyers. But, when we look at this, we look to see that we are not simply generating repeat sales from first or second generation Prius owners, but broadening the owner base and capturing first time hybrid buyers as well with the new Prius. And, when we look month by month since launch, we see the trend heading in the right direction.

    Those numbers are really only meaningful if there are enough of each model and package combination to meet demand. While you say that 1/3 of all sales are Prius II's, there are many sitting on lots, but almost no Prius V's. Those sales percentages are of course limited by the number of each package available for sale--you can't sell 5,000 Prius V with Advance Tech if only 1,200 are available. As such, people do not necessarily buy the model or color desired but instead walk away with something in stock.

    By making lots of one model and few of other models, I think what we see is a kind of positive feedback going to some models (like Prius II) due to limited availability of other models. A better measure of popularity might be the sold percentage of each model and package delivered to dealers. I bet that Prius V with ATP and Prius V with SR would top the list at near 100%. That would tell me to build more of those!!

    Yep. OPEC pooped in their mess kit when they got prices so high that forced people to look at Prius. Now even though gas prices are back down, people already know that "Hey, this is a nice car". And so does everyone of their friends and relatives and co-workers that ride with them, so the word spreads exponentially. Glad to see it.

    First time buyer here and have to say that the Prius reputation and market dominance made it a no brainer for us to go this route. The price of gas nudged us in this direction but the Prius tech-ness made us believers.

    Well just look at the base of new members that we have here. PC members were diverse but shared the similar interests in hybrid vehicles (of all kind). Now we have a ton of new members who just bought a Gen III (and a good chunk have said they didn't consider the Gen II for various reasons) and an even more diverse group. However, we share only one common interest - Gen III Prius.

    I am not surprised about the top 3, except that in the NW, winter grey lagged way behind. When I checked (call and web) about 50 dealers in OR, WA, ID, originally looking for SBM, and then blue, at least 3 out of 5 cars posted on the dealer web pages were silver, followed by Pearl. I could page through 50 cars before I found SBM, blue, or black. A few more red and grey. Also, as for CA outselling other states, again no surprise since their allocations were huge compared to the 3 state NW; and in turn were selling many II and III below MSRP whereas no one up here was. I did not go down, due to sales tax issues vs flatbedding. In hindsight it would have been better to have used Diane and shipped it back. I joined the site too late to find her!
