I think in the 4th Gen Prius, it would be better to have a center console that comes out a little from the dash, but leaves some open space between the driver and passenger seat.

A new Camry or Highlander Hybrid are examples of great cockpit design.

If they put the Gen4 shifter back on the dash, then can open the space where shifter lies in pic of Highlander above.

A friend of mine rented a GII last week. I posted pics on Facebook of my new '10 and she commented "Well, this 'joystick' is a little less goofy than the one in the Prius I just had. :)"

it is a nice design and the advantages of having a wider car is very apparent. with less space to use, i dont think the Pri can match the ergonomics

You know, why even have a "shifter" anyway, why not buttons?

ya, ok... instead of one shifter, we have 5 buttons?? hmmm, i thought the shifter on the Pri was revoluntionary in its design to be functional, easy to operate and save space.

    Thought control. That's the answer.

I can see me driving, going "don't think of reverse, don't think of reverse, don't...oh crap!...EEEERRRRRGGPPKKKtwingClunk". :D

As a new prius owner, I like the innovative center design console with a "floating" gear box as it emphasize the vehicle as HEV compared to regular cars with gear box / console attached to the floor. I also find it easier to access control buttons since my arm is usually resting on the console when driving.

I have the feeling that the real reason why one may never even consider push buttons for the transmission selector is because the Edsel had them and the Edsel is still known as all the ways to fail.

    Oh no!... not that much!

I do see some space in front of the overhead lighting controls.. but there must be something in there beside empty space.

I'm still trying to figure out a way to "illuminate" the cool blue shifter....
Maybe unscrew it and put some glow paint on the inside and screw it back down?...... If light could make it to the glow paint, it would give a soft blue glow in the dark!

It has its own blue "spotlight" already...between the map lights.

True and I really like that, but the shifter is lost in the dim glow of the whole console... I'm wanting to take advantage of the beautiful blues already in the shifter by having light emit from the inside out.

Why not start your own thread to see if anyone else has ideas that could help you get this done? You could name it something interesting; perhaps something like:

    illuminate the joystick shifter?

I'll be following it to see what you do. And then I'll probably try to do the same!

OK. I don't really know what you mean, but I did enjoy the link to the tritium sticks. I like the various colors, and there seems to be an appropriate blue that isn't too bright.

    One question: Are they heavy?:D

    Not exactly!

He had already started that thread. I was just yankin' his chain by providing a link to that thread. I hoped it would help get more people to visit his new thread. I also thought it would be a little fun to do.

I just couldn't quite follow his retort.

(I think he might be just a TAD smarter and quicker-witted than am I.)
