i was wondering if anyone has experienced a voice coil failure of the front woofers? after almost 5 years of hard pumping my left front speaker is on its way out. it will distort at any volume above 20.

I'm not sure about voice coil failure but cone or surround damage would have the characteristics you described; okay at lower volumes but increased distortion as volume increases.

Probably time for new speakers, especially if you've been driving them hard. Check out Part Express for all kinds of replacement drivers. You have to do more work yourself to match up the performance specs but can save some money and/or get better sound.

Otherwise, Crutchfield has excellent tools for matching up components to your car.

    Good luck!

I haven't had the voice-coil go out, but I did have the 67 days of 100+ temps in Dallas, TX dry out my foam ring and had it separate from the cone.

It was pretty fairly easy to move, had it re-foamed for 40 bucks at a local Speaker Repair shop I found on Google.

    Now I'm all better.

the one i had was the coil. it was high resistance with no foam damage. it was replaced with a 06+ model speaker. works fine however the magnet size on the 04 was larger than the 06.

I had one of the rear door tweeters go out, they fixed for free! I would just buy a set of OEM's online and replace them yourself! Or take this opportunity and go hog nutz wild and do the killer system route. F8L has great knowledge on this subject.
I expect him to pop in here any post now.....

The best bang for the buck is a new set of speakers unless you are happy with oem speakers and can't get a replacement cheaply. Wrecking yards can be a good source.

The oem speakers are not that bad. An upgraded stereo can make them sound even better. I ran the oem speakers on an aftermarket stereo for years with a subwoofer to take over the job of low frequency production. Trying to force those dinky oem speakers to play bass is just asking for trouble.

well it been runing hard since late '09 on the facelift '06 spec speaker. i got it for free by puting it in a buddys car and sending him in for wty. the dealer never called us on this. i also got a sat nav ecu the same way. this local dealer is known to do some quetionable work and not know much about hybrids in general. my buddy adgreed to do it as revenge for them making a mess on his corolla engine rebuild. that engine ended up burning more oil after the build than before. though they did pay for a third party (me) to fix their work, he still hates them for wasting 6 weeks of his life
