Tapping the license plate lights?

    Tried this thread before but haven't seen it posted - I learn slowly.

    I'm new to Prius (2010-II, Sandy Beach) after 36 years with SAAB and I'd appreciate your wisdom on some aftermarket modifications to my basic package.

    I'd like to add a rear view camera (likely a Roadmaster VR3, 3.5") and later a GPS. Living in an urban setting side and bumper protection is also tempting.

    I'm in awe of "surgeons" like DeanFL and hawkmoon77 and their ability to dismantle, modify, and restore. I'm not sure I could take those paths.

    For years (after visiting Canada) I've always driven with lights on. So my thought is to power the rear view camera by tapping the license plate lights and drilling through the knockout for the OEM camera. I don't know about the life expectancy of the camera. My question: is it feasible?

    While hardwiring the camera is ideal I'd rather that be "Plan B" while I try the wireless option first.

    As to the monitor (and future GPS) I'm thinking about a multiple underdash (cigarette lighter) outlet and running the monitor power through a switch at one of the knockouts (hiding the wires as well as one can).

    I'd appreciate your thoughts.

    Thanks for your compliments, but I'm a hacker - lucky too, I'd guess.

    If you're considering the VR3 - food for thought. I installed one in my Lexus years ago. Connected to the backup lights, and wireless. It worked OK, but a bit of interference (picked up store security cameras etc). And it took a second or two for the image to appear clearly. That's why I decided to connect my Prius system wired and switched. It works great - a lot more work, but... Also I contacted Roadmaster when I installed that prior system and asked support about keeping the camera and/or monitor powered up all the time. They said not to - it was not designed for continual use. FYI. But, actually for the times you may use the system, in reverse and needing the view - the wireless should work well. You can always have it 'wired' later.

    Also, I know that Pepboys can install the system at a decent price -forget now, (but around $40) But it's the basic install.

    The knockouts for switches - can't answer; didn't go there. Also re the GPS and added 12V outlet, you may want to check out my post about a week ago here. I installed a dedicated cigar lighter outlet for the GPS under the left dash.

    [FONT=&quot]I'd like to add a back up camera to my model II but don't want a monitor on the dash or under the center console. The Canadian models offer a rear view mirror with built in monitor. Does anyone know if this can be added to US models and how to order it? I know I'd have to replace my mirror but it seems like a cleaner option vs a monitor added somewhere else
