I just picked up my new Prius III on Saturday, August 29. It had 4 miles on it. The dealer had said when I paid the down payment that they would not let anyone inside the car or drive. They had one on the lot ready for delivery and would not let me inside. I could look all I wanted but they would not unlock it for me.
I appreciated that and am glad that they did not let anyone inside mine that I know of.

Mine had more than most here. About 75 as I recall, and the gas mileage was at 35 mpg, so they were some hard driven miles in my opinion. darn it!

When I arrived at the dealer to look at Priuses they had on their lot, I was told they didn't have what I wanted (Gen III, Black, leather, Navigation). After test-driving one and laying down my deposit for the one I wanted (that I was told was coming in the pipeline), I was told that the dealer had one just arrive on their other lot, 75 miles away. So, I sat and waited for 2 hours for someone to drive me my car. It had ~100 miles on it when I received it.

Mine had 35 miles on it. The sales lady seemed quite suprised when I asked about it. She said that they were "just test drive miles".
Don't dealers have demo cars anymore?

Got mine monday. The car literally come in on the truck as I was talking to the salesman about it. It has 4 miles on it after they did the inspection and filled it up with gas. But I live about 75 miles from the dealer I got it from, I'm already over 100 miles on it...

I talked to the dealer about that when the 2010 just started arriving at the dealers. I ask him aren't they going to get a demo in so you can test drive one, he told me, no demo's

Just 2 miles. The car was at the dealer for a month before I could pick it up, but the dealer assured me that he would make sure no one touched it before I picked it up. He was a man of his word.

I found a dealer that was holding a Prius as a demo only, he would not sell me the car. He said that is dealer policy, to always have at least one of each make on the lot, said they lose more sales by not having something to show somebody vs. selling the last one. I don't believe it. I was ready to write the check on the spot, but they refused. Only option was to put $1,000 down on it to hold it, BUT THEY WOULD STILL SHOW IT AS A DEMO, and I would not have a firm date on when I could get it, it might be a day or two, it could be weeks, it depended on when they get one in that was not already pre-sold. I said NO.... WAY.....

I bought my Prius a couple of days later at another dealer, but being 75 miles from my house, about an hour and 1/2, I won't go there for service. The one that wouldn't sell to me was about 25 mintues. I probably would have gone back to them for service if I had bought from them, and maybe for our 99 4Runner too, they potentially lost alot of service $$$ from us. Not too smart IMO to not sell a car you have in inventory....and it was right at the end of the month too....

1 mile. We picked it up the day it arrived on the trailer, so there was no opportunity for test drives or anything else.

DEMOS on a car are actually TDPVs (Tax Deductabe Personal Vehicles). They are likely ordered to the personal specifications of some VIP within the dealership staff, and driven home each night and on days off. Yes, if they happen to be on the lot, a potential buyer might be alowed to drive one, but their primary purposes are as someones personal vehicle, which is why in the case you describe, the dealer was unwilling to sell the car.

Well, that is not what they told me. The car was for show only, nobody was driving it, only customers, it didn't have many miles on it. They wanted something customers could touch and feel I guess. But with the car in such demand, most people would already know what they were looking for if they had one. Maybe there is something to their story of losing sales without something to show people. But I know that they lost MY sale, and future service revenue because of their policy.....

    Hi:

Picked ours up on Tuesday, September 01, 2009 and it had 17KM showing on the dash - approximately 10.6 miles.

    Take care.....
